Welcoming the Tamil New Year with tradition and flavour, Southern Spice at Taj Coromandel invites guests to indulge in a specially curated festive feast that celebrates the essence of Puthandu.
Marking the beginning of the Tamil calendar in the month of Chithirai, Puthandu is a time of renewal, prosperity, and togetherness. Homes come alive with vibrant kolams, mango leaf decorations, and meaningful rituals, while the festive table reflects life’s six flavours, sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent, symbolising the varied experiences of the year ahead.
Capturing this spirit, Southern Spice presents an immersive culinary journey rooted in authentic South Indian traditions. The experience begins with refreshing welcome drinks such as Nannari Sherbet and the festive favourite Panagam, setting the tone for a thoughtfully crafted menu.
Guests can savour beloved classics like Ulundu Vadai, Mani Kozhukattai, and Murungai Keerai Adai, each prepared with traditional techniques and flavours. A highlight of the celebration is the iconic Mangai Pachadi, a signature Tamil New Year dish that beautifully balances jaggery, raw mango, and neem, embodying the festival’s deeper symbolism.
The menu further explores regional specialities from across Tamil Nadu. From the comforting Tirunelveli-style Aviyal to the tangy Kathirikkai Mochai Puli Curry, every dish reflects the richness of home-style cooking. Non-vegetarian offerings include favourites such as Kola Urundai from Madurai, Chettinad-style Kozhi Uppu Kari, Meen Manga Curry, and the slow-cooked Attukal Paya.
Complementing the mains are traditional accompaniments like Mappillai Samba Rice, Idiyappam, and Nool Parotta, paired with Arachuvitta Sambar and Kuthiraivali Curd Rice, completing a wholesome festive spread.
Desserts bring the experience to a delightful close with indulgent options such as Akkaravadisal, Nungu Payasam, and the classic Mukkani Thattu featuring mango, banana, and jackfruit. Adding a unique twist is the Pachai Payaru & Panangarkandu Ice Cream, blending roasted green gram with natural palm sugar.
Recognised among India’s Top 50 Restaurants by Condé Nast Traveller India and awarded four stars by Culinary Culture’s Ultimate Restaurant Ratings, Southern Spice continues to set benchmarks in regional Indian dining.
Guests can experience this festive feast on April 14, 2026, with specially curated thalis available for both lunch and dinner, offering a memorable way to celebrate the Tamil New Year with family and loved ones.
