Chin Chin, the Chinese restaurant at The Residency Chennai, is presenting a Hakka Chinese Food Pop-Up featuring guest chef Katherine Lim from October 14 to 18, 2026. The limited-period dining experience will introduce guests to the culinary traditions of the Hakka community through regional specialities, home-style preparations and contemporary Asian influences.
Rooted in the migration and cultural history of the Hakka people, the menu moves beyond familiar Chinese restaurant favourites to showcase distinctive ingredients, traditional cooking techniques and dishes associated with different Chinese culinary regions. Drawing inspiration from Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and other Asian destinations, the pop-up aims to highlight the diversity and evolution of Hakka cuisine.
Among the featured dishes is Hakka Salt-Baked Chicken, marinated with sand ginger and rice wine. The menu also includes Hakka Yam Abacus Beads, a traditional speciality associated with Chinese New Year celebrations and symbolising wealth and prosperity.
The selection extends to Typhoon Shelter Prawns, inspired by Hong Kong's boatmen's cuisine, and Xinjiang Lamb, seasoned with Sichuan pepper, cumin and chilli. These dishes bring together varied regional influences and flavour profiles, from aromatic spices to bold, savoury preparations.
Other offerings include Hakka Egg Dumpling Soup, Chilli Bean Braised Fish and Scallion 'Explosion' Beef. Vegetarian options such as Twice Cooked Tofu with Leeks and Chap Choy provide additional choices for diners exploring the menu.
The experience concludes with Asian-inspired desserts, including Liu Sha Bao and Asian Sago with Grass Jelly, adding a sweet finish to the regional culinary showcase.
Through the pop-up, Chin Chin aims to introduce diners in Chennai to the history and distinctive food traditions of the Hakka community. Curated by guest chef Katherine Lim, the menu offers an opportunity to explore a regional Chinese cuisine shaped by migration, cultural exchange and evolving culinary influences.
