Overview

On the occasion of World Environment Day, ITC Maratha has joined hands with the Maharashtra State Angling Association (MSSA) to organise a Powai Lake Clean-Up and Rejuvenation Drive, reinforcing the importance of collective action in preserving Mumbai’s natural ecosystems.

The initiative is aimed at raising awareness around environmental conservation, reducing plastic pollution, and promoting the long-term protection of aquatic biodiversity at one of Mumbai’s most significant urban water bodies. Powai Lake, a vital ecological landmark in the city, continues to face challenges related to urban pressure and waste accumulation, making community-led conservation efforts increasingly important.

As part of the drive, employees and volunteers from ITC Maratha will collaborate with members of Maharashtra State Angling Association, along with lake maintenance workers, to carry out extensive clean-up activities around Powai Lake.

The programme will also include awareness sessions focused on biodiversity, ecology, and sustainable environmental practices. In addition, lake conservation workers will be felicitated for their continued efforts in maintaining and protecting the water body, recognising their contribution to the city’s ecological balance.

Speaking on the initiative, representatives from ITC Maratha and MSSA highlighted that protecting Powai Lake is not only an environmental responsibility but also a shared commitment towards safeguarding Mumbai’s ecological future for generations to come. The drive aims to encourage greater community participation and inspire long-term behavioural change towards environmental responsibility.

Scheduled for 5th June 2026, the World Environment Day initiative reflects a growing trend among hospitality brands to actively participate in sustainability-focused community programmes. By combining corporate responsibility with on-ground action, the initiative reinforces the importance of collaboration between industry, civic groups, and citizens in building a cleaner and greener urban environment.

Through this effort, ITC Maratha and MSSA aim to strengthen awareness around lake conservation while promoting a culture of environmental stewardship in Mumbai.
