KYNKYNY Art Gallery presents Nestled Within, a solo exhibition by Janarthanan Rudhramoorthy, on view from 30 May to 27 June 2025. The Chennai-based sculptor brings forth an arresting display of suspended iron and steel figures, exploring the human body as both form and vessel.
In this unique installation, free-floating metallic sculptures seem to soar through space, twisting and gliding in mid-air. Suspended from walls and ceilings, these colossal creations evoke sensations that are somatic, kinetic, and deeply tactile—felt before they are fully understood.
A resident of Ambattur, Chennai, Rudhramoorthy discovered his voice in metal, using its raw, expressive strength to explore themes of human identity, presence, and transformation. His forms are inspired by modern dance and Yoga, and reflect a liberated, fluid state of being. Whether solitary or intertwined, each figure appears caught mid-motion, their shadows enhancing the drama of movement.
“The body is not very different from a bird’s nest,” says the artist. “It holds life within it. The layers we build—both visible and invisible—form our inner and outer identity.” This philosophy is at the heart of Nestled Within, where each sculpture, often titled with introspective names like Fragments of Identity or Conscience, reveals the multi-layered nature of the self.
Created in his Chennai studio, these rusted iron works are not just aesthetically striking, but symbolically potent. The intentional rusting of the metal serves as a metaphor for change, decay, and renewal, echoing the cycles of nature and the inevitable passage of time.
At a moment when body image and ageing often dominate public consciousness, Rudhramoorthy’s work invites viewers to embrace the soul within the structure, encouraging awareness, acceptance, and a deeper connection to self.
