Sheraton Hyderabad Hotel is set to bring a rare cultural and culinary experience to the city with its latest collaboration with Chef Fathima Riyaz. From September 17 to 21, the hotel’s Feast restaurant will host “The Bhatkali Table”, a five-day dining experience dedicated to reviving and celebrating the endangered recipes of Karnataka’s Nawayath community.
Chef Fathima Riyaz, a home chef of Bhatkali descent, has made it her mission to preserve the rich culinary heritage of her community. Having grown up in Bangalore, her summers were spent in her grandmother’s Musba House in Bhatkal, where she learned treasured family recipes passed down through generations. While her culinary journey has taken her to the kitchens of five-star hotels, her true passion lies in keeping alive the flavors of a cuisine that could otherwise fade away within a generation.
The Nawayath community traces its roots to Arab traders from Yemen and Persia who settled on Karnataka’s Karavali coast centuries ago, blending their traditions with Konkani Muslim culture. This fusion is reflected in the cuisine, where Middle Eastern spices meet the fresh coastal flavors of Konkan.
Over the five days, guests can indulge in a range of authentic Bhatkali dishes that highlight this unique culinary identity. Specialties include Shayya Biryani, made with rice vermicelli instead of basmati rice; Haldi Pana Nevri, chicken coconut masala steamed in turmeric leaves; Mudkale, rice balls simmered with prawns in coconut milk; Laun Miriya Mhaure, fish cooked in chili paste; and Shinonya Nevri, mussels stuffed with spiced rice and coconut.
The menu also features traditional desserts such as Showfapana Poli, crafted with dill leaves; Shayya Godaan, a vermicelli and coconut kheer; and Shaala Pudding, blending coconut water and cream.
This collaboration is more than a gastronomic experience, it is a cultural preservation initiative. By presenting these rare recipes, Sheraton Hyderabad and Chef Fathima Riyaz offer food lovers an opportunity to connect with centuries-old traditions and ensure that the maritime heritage of the Nawayath community continues to thrive.
