Taj Coromandel, Chennai is celebrating the spirit of Madras Week with a special culinary experience at Southern Spice, its award-winning South Indian speciality restaurant. Running from 20 to 22 August 2026, the curated menu takes diners on a journey through the flavours, memories and culinary traditions associated with the erstwhile Madras Presidency.
An integral part of Chennai's cultural landscape for more than five decades, Taj Coromandel is marking the city's heritage through a menu inspired by iconic neighbourhoods and landmarks including Marina Beach, Mylapore, Royapuram, George Town and Fort St. George.
The experience begins with a selection of nostalgic welcome drinks inspired by familiar Chennai favourites. Marina Beach Nannari Sharbat, Mylapore Rose Milk and Broadway Paneer Soda offer refreshing interpretations of flavours associated with the city.
The menu continues with soups inspired by Chennai's culinary and cultural traditions. Kapaleeshwarar Temple Tulsi Rasam brings together tulsi, pepper and traditional rasam flavours, while Royapuram Attukal Soup features a slow-cooked mutton trotters' broth infused with traditional spices.
For starters, the menu explores Chennai's coastal and street-food heritage through dishes such as Marina Beach Molaga Bhaji, Mint Street Kalan Masala, Royapuram Nethili Meen Varuval and Ripon Building Nandu Cutlet.
The main course brings together some of the city's beloved tiffin and heritage preparations. Kapaleeshwarar Puliyogare draws inspiration from temple-style tamarind rice, while Kodambakkam Vada Curry with Kal Dosa combines soft stone-griddle dosa with a traditional vada curry.
The menu also features Madras University Kothu Parotta with Salna, celebrating Chennai's street-food culture, alongside richer heritage dishes including Broadway Mutton Liver & Moolai Melagu Roast, Madras Presidency Mutton Chops and Thomas Munro Chicken Meatball Curry, reflecting the diverse culinary influences that shaped the city's food culture.
Desserts complete the journey through old Madras with St. George Fort Caramel Custard, Old Madras Coconut Bun and Besant Nagar Kuchi Ice Cream, each offering a nostalgic interpretation of familiar flavours and culinary memories.
Through the limited-period menu, Southern Spice brings together Chennai's history, neighbourhoods and culinary traditions on one table, offering diners an opportunity to rediscover the city through food during Madras Week.
