THE Lotus Palace Chettinad, a luxury heritage hotel by Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Limited, has launched ‘Kalai’, Chettinad Art and Architecture Festival, a four-day, three-night experience celebrating the artistic and cultural richness of Chettinad. Scheduled from 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th April 2026, the festival brings together architecture, history, art, and local traditions in an immersive format.

The festival is curated by THE Lotus Palace Chettinad in collaboration with some of Chettinad’s most well-known heritage properties including The Bangala, Visalam, Chidambara Vilas, Chettinad Mansion and Saratha Vilas. Together, they offer guests a thoughtfully planned journey through the region’s architectural beauty, cultural depth, and living traditions.

Set across centuries-old Chettiar mansions, temples, and local craft spaces, Kalai gives visitors a close look at one of India’s most distinctive architectural styles. The experience reflects a unique blend of global influences and traditional aesthetics that define Chettinad.

Each day of the festival focuses on a different aspect of the region. From grand courtyards and detailed mansions to temple architecture and village walks, the itinerary is designed to offer both learning and exploration. The festival also includes talks by noted experts, making it more than just a cultural event, it becomes a meaningful journey through space, design, and history.

Guests will stay in restored heritage mansions and take part in guided architectural tours led by experts. The festival will feature sessions by Sujatha Shankar, Sashikala Ananth, and Pradeep Chakravarthy, who will share insights on architecture, Vastu principles, and the cultural history of South India. Alongside this, visitors can enjoy traditional performances, authentic Chettinad cuisine, and well-organised experiences managed by THE Lotus Palace Chettinad.

The festival begins on Friday, 3rd April 2026, with arrivals and a welcome reception at THE Lotus Palace Chettinad, followed by the official inauguration and an opening talk by Sujatha Shankar. The evening will include a cocktail reception, DJ set, and curated dinner.

On Saturday, 4th April 2026, the focus shifts to Chettinad mansions and architectural traditions. The day includes guided visits to AR House and VVR House, along with a session by Sashikala Ananth on Vastu Shastra. Guests will also explore the Karaikudi Antique Market and enjoy an evening of live music and dinner at Chidambara Vilas.

Sunday, 5th April 2026, highlights temple architecture and craft heritage. The day features a visit to Thirumayam Temple with a guided session by Pradeep Chakravarthy, followed by an Athangudi tile-making demonstration, a visit to a saree weaving centre, and a heritage walk. The evening concludes with a cultural performance and dinner at Visalam.

The final day, Monday, 6th April 2026, is centred around art and departure. Guests will visit the 1000 Window House and a Tanjore painting centre, followed by a talk by Michel Adment and Bernard Dragon of Saratha Vilas, and a farewell lunch before departures.

The package is designed as a 3-night, 5-day experience, offering a well-rounded exploration of Chettinad’s heritage.
