If there's one thing I've been chasing lately, it's authenticity. Authentic flavours, authentic vibes, and authentic experiences. On my recent food find, I found all these rolled into one, right at the heart of Chettinad Canteen. With branches already making a mark in Coimbatore, this restaurant has decided to sprinkle its unique Chettinad essence in Chennai, and boy, have they succeeded!
From the moment I stepped into Chettinad Canteen, there was a sense of warmth that wrapped around me. The comforting golden-yellow lights illuminating the cozy space added to the feeling of serenity. The interiors spoke of a blend of tradition and simplicity, the perfect setting to enjoy a meal that promises to be anything but ordinary.
The geniuses behind this culinary gem? Mr. Sethu Subbiah, the Business Leader, Mrs. Meyyammai Ramanathan, the Culinary Visionary, and Mr. Vivek Chidambaram, the Operations Whiz. Together, they've not only captured the essence of Chettinad flavours but have also encapsulated the heartwarming traditions of Karaikudi.
One of the standouts of my visit was the service. It wasn't just about serving dishes; it was an experience. Right at the outset, they prepare your stomach with an authentic Thakkali (tomato) Rasam. I promise you, it's so divine you'll ask for seconds. And if you think that's where the thrill ends, you're in for a treat with the Arusuvai – an ensemble of six different tasting edibles designed to tantalise each of your taste buds.
With my senses fully awakened, I ventured into their seven-course meal. And what a feast it was! From the intriguing Valaipoo Sammas paired with Burmese Kavanarisi to the Mizhagu Kozhi that brought a joyous tear to my eye, each dish was a revelation. The Kavuni Arisi Appam soaked in cooling Thenga Paal was an absolute palate cleanser, and by the time I reached the Chilli Parotta and Koozhikuzhambu, I was in food heaven.
The meal wrapped up with the simple yet satisfying Thayir Sadham, a gentle nod to the Chettinad tradition. And just when I thought it couldn't get better, the desserts made their entrance. The Aadi Kumayam's chilled journey from my tongue to my stomach, followed by the delightful Carrot Kheer, was the perfect full stop to this symphony of flavours.
But wait, there's more! A box of childhood sweets awaited at the end – Kamarkattu, Sombu Sweet, Orange Mittai and more. Sweet memories, indeed!
To sum it up, Chettinad Canteen isn't just a restaurant. It's an experience, a journey through the rich tapestry of Chettinad culture and cuisine. If you're in Chennai or Coimbatore and have a penchant for authenticity, this is a place you simply cannot miss!
