According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), India has added over 4 million jobs in the past year, primarily driven by the hotel and tourism industry, with some growth in the manufacturing sector as well. The total workforce in India in May 2023 reached 408 million, compared to 403.9 million a year ago, reflecting an addition of approximately 4.1 million jobs.

CMIE's weekly labour market analysis highlights that the services sector experienced the highest job growth, followed by the industry sector. However, the agricultural sector witnessed a decline in employment over the past year. The data suggests a notable increase in job opportunities in the services sector, particularly in the hotel and tourism industry, indicating a positive trend towards pre-pandemic levels.

Specifically, CMIE data shows that employment in the services sector rose from 149.2 million to 157.9 million between May 2022 and May 2023. In the same period, the industry sector saw a slight increase from 108.5 million to 109.6 million jobs. Conversely, the agricultural workforce decreased from 146.1 million to 140.1 million.

Within the services sector, the hotel and tourism industry contributed significantly to job creation, adding 5.4 million jobs in one year. The healthcare industry also saw an addition of approximately 1.8 million jobs.

While employment in the industry sector grew by just over one million, representing less than 1% growth, the overall employment share of the industry remained unchanged at 27.41%. Manufacturing accounted for over 3 million job additions, while the utility sector saw an increase of over 87,000 employed individuals between May 2022 and May 2023. However, the real estate and construction sector experienced a decline of nearly 2 million jobs, which typically employs a large portion of the industry's workforce. Additionally, the mining sector witnessed a decline of 0.13 million jobs, and the agriculture sector saw a decrease of 6 million employed individuals.

India's employment data for May 2023 indicates a significant increase in job opportunities in the services sector. Although the employment share of the industry remained steady, it has shown signs of recovery to pre-pandemic levels.
