Kerala's tourism sector celebrated a historic achievement in 2023, setting a new record with 2.18 crore domestic tourist arrivals, a testament to the state's enduring appeal and strategic promotional efforts. Minister for Tourism and Public Works, P A Mohamed Riyas, revealed this significant growth of 15.92% over the previous year's figures, marking an 18.97% increase compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

The enchanting state of Kerala, known for its lush landscapes, serene backwaters, and rich cultural heritage, has emerged as a preferred destination for both domestic and international tourists. Ernakulam district, with its vibrant city of Kochi, led the way by hosting 44,87,930 domestic visitors, followed by Idukki, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Wayanad, showcasing the diverse attractions Kerala has to offer.

On the international front, Kerala welcomed 6,49,057 tourists in 2023, nearly doubling the number from 2022 and indicating a robust 87.83% growth. Ernakulam district again topped the list for foreign visitors, underscoring the global appeal of Kerala's tourism landmarks. Despite this impressive recovery, international tourist arrivals remain 45.45% lower than pre-COVID-19 levels, highlighting the ongoing journey towards full tourism revival.

Minister Riyas attributed this success to Kerala Tourism's dynamic policy initiatives and targeted promotional campaigns, both within India and abroad. The state's tourism department has worked diligently to rebound from the pandemic's impact, with special emphasis on adventure tourism and attracting more visitors to the Malabar region in the coming year.

This record-setting performance by Kerala's tourism sector not only reflects the state's natural beauty and cultural wealth but also the resilience and innovation of its tourism industry. As Kerala continues to navigate the challenges of global conflicts and pandemic recovery, the focus remains on enhancing its tourism offerings and reclaiming its position as a leading destination on the global tourism map.

With plans in motion to further boost visitor numbers, Kerala's tourism sector is poised for continued growth, inviting travellers from across the world to explore its myriad wonders and experience the unmatched hospitality that the state is renowned for.
