Homegrown luxury hospitality brand jüSTa Hotels & Resorts is all set to unveil its first wildlife resort in Corbett on October 19, 2023. Marking the company’s 22nd hotel in India, it’s also the third property in Uttarakhand, following Mukteshwar and Rishikesh. This boutique resort, known as jüSTa Lazy Haven Corbett, is located in Kyari, a small hamlet surrounded by forests, and offers an exciting venture into the world of wildlife hospitality.

Founder & CEO of jüSTa Hotels & Resorts, Mr. Ashish Vohra, shared an interesting vision for their business. They aim to create itinerary-based experiences for guests that allow them to explore key destinations in a region within a span of 7-10 days. This property in Corbett aligns perfectly with their expansion plans in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. They believe this region holds significant tourism potential, and similar circuits are in the works for Kerala and Himachal Pradesh.

One key factor that sets jüSTa Lazy Haven Corbett apart is its serene location. Away from the bustling areas of the Jim Corbett National Park, this property offers guests a unique jungle experience, allowing them to immerse themselves in forest bathing. It’s situated in Kyari, just 6 kilometers away from the state highway, accessible via a scenic village road. The Bijrani Zone of the Jim Corbett National Park is conveniently located 9.5 kilometers from the resort, while the Sitavani Zone is 8 kilometers away.

Spread over 1.1 acres of land, nearly half of which is lush green, jüSTa Lazy Haven Corbett is located just 200 meters from a river stream. The resort offers 24 rooms in two categories: Superior Room with Balcony and Deluxe Room with Balcony. Other amenities include a swimming pool with a kids' pool, a 48-seat multi-cuisine restaurant, and a spa. To enrich the wildlife experience, there's an in-house naturalist who can provide insights into the region's flora and fauna.

The resort is committed to sustainability and eco-friendliness. They recycle grey and black water separately, compost organic waste for garden use, and use white roofs for passive cooling. Recycled bamboo insulation, held in place by locally woven mats, ensures energy efficiency. These mats, adorned with traditional Garhwali baskets, also serve as decorative lighting throughout the resort. Even the spa, which offers breathtaking forest views, has been constructed using recycled materials.

While the Jim Corbett National Park attracts wildlife enthusiasts from across the country, the resort also arranges safaris in the National Park. For those who wish to explore further, visits to other major tourist attractions in the region can be arranged. These include the Jim Corbett Museum in Dhangarhi, Corbett Falls, Garjiya Temple, Hanuman Dham Temple, and Barati Rau Waterfalls, all within a 30-kilometer radius from the property.

jüSTa Hotels & Resorts is taking a step into the realm of wildlife resorts with jüSTa Lazy Haven Corbett, providing a unique and eco-conscious experience in the heart of Corbett, Uttarakhand. With an emphasis on sustainability and a vision for creating memorable tourist circuits, this new venture is poised to redefine the wildlife resort experience in India.

OYO Faces Rising Turmoil: Layoffs, Legal Troubles, and Hotelier Backlash

OYO Faces Rising Turmoil: Layoffs, Legal Troubles, and Hotelier Backlash

By Nishang Narayan

Published on December 26, 2024

The troubles for OYO, one of India’s most prominent unicorn startups, continue to escalate. According to an Economic Times report, the company plans to lay off 2,000 employees by the end of January as part of its cost-cutting measures, which also include automation of processes. While OYO touts itself as one of the “best places to work,” the planned layoffs come amidst mounting internal and external challenges.

An OYO spokesperson stated, “OYO continuously tracks performances of individuals, and depending on the results and the individual’s interests, we may replace some candidates after giving them the opportunity to go through a performance improvement programme.” However, layoffs are just one part of the growing crisis the company faces.

Backlash from Hotel Owners

OYO’s problems extend beyond its workforce. The startup is under fire from hotel owners across various markets for unpaid dues and unfavorable contract terms. In India, the dissatisfaction has even led to legal action. Recently, a Bengaluru hotelier filed a cheating case against OYO founder Ritesh Agarwal and six others, alleging non-payment of INR 7 lakh per month since May 2019.

Globally, similar issues persist. In the United States, hotel owners have raised concerns about OYO’s partner management system, citing its inefficiency and failure to meet payment commitments. In Japan, Yahoo terminated its partnership with OYO due to increasing complaints from hotel owners. Even in China, where OYO claims to be one of the largest hotel chains, property owners report receiving lower payments than initially promised.

Regulatory Scrutiny

Adding to its woes, OYO is also under investigation by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The probe focuses on a commercial agreement between OYO and MakeMyTrip, examining whether the partnership creates an unfair dominant position in the market.

Global Troubles Continue

The startup’s ambitious expansion into the US market has not been smooth, with several hotel owners expressing dissatisfaction with OYO’s operations. The issues of unpaid dues and operational inefficiencies seem to mirror the problems reported in other markets.

Despite these challenges, OYO continues to assert its commitment to growth and operational excellence. However, the growing dissent from hotel owners, legal battles, and regulatory scrutiny highlight a critical need for the company to address its operational inefficiencies and rebuild trust with its partners.

With these mounting issues, the road ahead for OYO appears increasingly complex. Will the unicorn be able to navigate these turbulent waters, or is its ambitious expansion strategy taking a toll on its foundational stability?
