As China's borders swing open, a seismic surge in global travel is shaking up the industry. The travel landscape is witnessing an unprecedented six-fold increase in outbound travel bookings compared to the previous year, signaling a massive appetite among Chinese travelers for international adventures.

The surge is particularly noteworthy during holiday seasons, exemplified by the eight-day Golden Week in October, where outbound travel witnessed an astonishing eightfold increase. The momentum doesn't stop there; the upcoming New Year Holiday season, spanning from December 31, 2023, to January 3, 2024, is poised for substantial growth, with a staggering 240% increase in bookings expected year-on-year from 2022.

Top Destinations and Inbound Tourism Trends

Chinese travelers are setting their sights on Southeast Asia, with Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia topping the list of preferred outbound destinations in 2023. This fascination with overseas exploration is predicted to extend into 2024.

Simultaneously, China's inbound travel is experiencing a steady recovery. Trip.com data for 2023 reveals a remarkable four-digit growth in visitor numbers compared to the same period in 2022, surpassing 60% of pre-pandemic levels.

As the gates to China open, the top source markets for inbound tourism include South Korea, Japan, Singapore, the United States, Australia, Malaysia, Canada, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Notably, Shenzhen emerges as a favorite among overseas tourists, with seven out of ten hotel bookings made for this vibrant destination.

In the midst of this travel resurgence, Trip.com's "China Travel Guide," launched in September, has been a valuable resource for nearly 100,000 overseas visitors. The guide provides comprehensive information on hotels, transportation, payments, and other travel-related details, facilitating a seamless experience for travelers exploring China.

The surge in outbound and inbound travel signals not just a recovery but an era of exciting opportunities for the travel industry.
