Eco-Aviation Unleashed: Virgin's Historic Full-SAF Flight Makes Global Headlines!

In an unprecedented move in aviation history, Virgin Atlantic has completed the world's first transatlantic flight using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The flight, known as Flight100, traveled from London Heathrow to New York JFK, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards decarbonizing long-haul aviation.

SAF, primarily derived from waste products, offers up to 70% CO2 lifecycle emissions savings compared to traditional jet fuel. It's a practical alternative for today's aviation industry, where other technologies like electric and hydrogen power are still years from being feasible. Despite its potential, SAF currently accounts for less than 0.1% of global jet fuel volumes, and fuel standards allow for only a 50% SAF blend in commercial jet engines.

Flight100, a monumental step forward, demonstrates that the larger challenge in scaling up SAF production is one of policy and investment. Both industry and government are urged to act swiftly to establish a robust UK SAF industry. Virgin Atlantic led this pioneering initiative in collaboration with key partners like Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Imperial College London, University of Sheffield, ICF, and Rocky Mountain Institute, and in partnership with the Department for Transport.

The SAF used for Flight100 comprised a unique dual blend: 88% HEFA (Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids) supplied by AirBP and 12% SAK (Synthetic Aromatic Kerosene) from Virent, a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum Corporation. HEFA is made from waste fats, while SAK is produced from plant sugars. This combination ensures not just the sustainable operation of the flight but also contributes positively to the food chain.

Moreover, Flight100 aims to assess the effects of SAF use on non-carbon emissions. With support from consortium partners, the research will enhance scientific understanding of SAF's impact on contrails and particulate matter, aiding in the integration of contrail forecasts in flight planning.

Virgin Atlantic, renowned for its young, fuel-efficient fleet, views Flight100 as a continuation of its 15-year dedication to developing SAF. CEO Shai Weiss emphasizes that SAF is a viable, safe, drop-in replacement for fossil-derived jet fuel, calling for further advancements in this field. Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic's founder, reflects on the airline's legacy of challenging the status quo, asserting that this milestone is a testament to its ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability in aviation.
