In a bid to enhance security and better regulate travel, the European Union is introducing the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). Starting in 2024, citizens from over 60 visa-exempt countries, including the USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan, will be required to obtain an ETIAS pass to enter 30 European countries.

ETIAS will categorize member countries into four groups: Schengen members, EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland), future Schengen members (Bulgaria, Cyprus), and European microstates (Andorra, Monaco).

The system aims to collate data on travellers who have previously entered the region without visas or background checks. Security checks will include criminal record verification and biometric information.

Passport holders from the mentioned countries must apply for an ETIAS pass, which is an electronic authorization received via email. The application process is simple, involving an online form and a 7 EUR fee for travellers aged 18 to 70. The application is typically processed within minutes but may take up to four days at most.

ETIAS permits will be valid for three years, allowing unlimited entries during that period, for up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe. This authorization is distinct from a Schengen visa, and EU nationals and those with residence permits are exempt from the ETIAS requirement.

For nationals of visa-required countries like India, the exemption is possible if they reside in any of the 60 eligible countries and meet certain conditions, such as being a student on a school trip or a refugee.

While the system has been delayed due to the scale of implementation and resource requirements, it represents a significant step towards reinforcing security and streamlining travel authorization processes for European destinations.
