In the year 2022, Germany emerged as a popular destination for work among foreign nationals, with Indians, Turks, and Serbs leading the way in securing national work visas. According to data from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, a total of 152,336 national work visas were granted, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year.

Indians topped the list of beneficiaries, receiving a total of 17,379 work visas in 2022. The German Consulate General in Bangalore played a major role in this, granting 8,613 work visas to Indians. Mumbai's Consulate General came next with 3,013 visas, followed by Chennai (2,483), the German Embassy in New Delhi (2,434), and the German Consulate in Kolkata (836).

Following closely, Turkish nationals received the second-highest number of work visas. Türkiye saw 12,542 of its citizens securing work visas in Germany. Among these, the German Embassy in Ankara and the Consulate General in Istanbul issued the highest numbers—6,410 and 4,735, respectively.

Serbian nationals claimed the third-largest share of work visas, with a total of 11,792 visas granted by the German Embassy in Belgrade.

In addition to these top three nationalities, Germany extended national work visas to citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (10,524), Kosovo (9,309), Russia (6,975), Albania (6,526), and North Macedonia (5,796).

Apart from work visas, Germany also saw a considerable issuance of other types of national visas. In 2022, a total of 393,083 national visas were granted, with spouse reunification and study purposes being the second and third most common reasons. Specifically, 71,129 national visas were issued for spouse reunification, and 71,018 were issued for study purposes.

These statistics reflect the growing appeal of Germany as a destination for work and educational pursuits among foreign nationals.
