Goa's Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, has highlighted the potential benefits of a 'Digital Nomad Visa' to strengthen the state's economy and generate employment. This visa would allow foreign digital nomads to work while enjoying a holiday in Goa. The state government is actively pursuing this initiative and engaging with the Ministry of External Affairs.
Khaunte believes that implementing a Digital Nomad Visa would enhance tourism by opening up new opportunities for homestays. It would also create employment and position Goa as a desirable global destination for work and leisure. The minister expressed his intention to discuss the Digital Nomad Visa proposal with the Ministry of External Affairs, with the support of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Highlighting the advantages of the concept, Khaunte mentioned that around 46 countries already offer Digital Nomad Visas. Goa, known for its quality of life and scenic beauty, has witnessed an increase in domestic tourists working remotely from the coastal state during the post-pandemic period. Digital nomads often stay for extended periods, which can greatly benefit the local homestay program.
In addition to pursuing the Digital Nomad Visa, the Tourism Department of Goa is in the process of formulating a homestay policy. The government aims to establish an exemplary model of sustainable tourism that can be emulated worldwide. Furthermore, Goa plans to diversify its tourism offerings by promoting lesser-explored aspects such as spirituality, agro-tourism, eco-tourism, and traditional features.
By embracing the digital nomad concept and focusing on sustainable tourism development, Goa envisions a brighter future for its tourism sector, attracting a diverse range of visitors and boosting the state's overall economy.
