Goonj Reimagines India's Nostalgia Through Food, Cocktails and Design

What does India smell like? Sandalwood and jasmine, perhaps. Raw mango in summer, freshly crushed tulsi, warm spices or the familiar sweetness of banana. For Goonj, a new Indian food house and cocktail destination in Bengaluru's Indiranagar, these everyday references become the starting point for a dining experience shaped by memory.

Located on 100 Feet Road, Indiranagar, Goonj spans 2,500 sq. ft. on the fourth floor and accommodates 75 guests. Its concept is built around India as it is remembered, through aromas, flavours, colours, sounds and familiar experiences rather than simply through visual references.

The name Goonj, meaning "an echo", reflects the idea behind the space. The food, cocktails and interiors revisit recognisable Indian references while presenting them through a contemporary lens.

The cocktail programme forms a central part of the concept. Divided into Nostalgia and Colour, the menu draws inspiration from different moods, memories and elements of Indian life.

The Nostalgia section features cocktails such as Nazaakat, Sawan, Alaap, Murki, Darbaar, Raaga, Jugalbandi and Antara. The drinks take cues from monsoons, royal courts, spice boxes, gardens, family kitchens and Indian musical traditions.

Rather than relying only on familiar flavour combinations, the programme uses techniques including clarification, distillation, infusion, carbonation, foams and house-made cordials to reinterpret these references in cocktail form.

The second section, Colour, explores India through shades and their associated sensory cues. Saffron, Gulal, Asmaan, Hariyali, Kohinoor and Sooraj translate familiar colours into combinations of flavour, aroma and texture.

For guests looking for more familiar options, the menu also includes a selection of classic cocktails, while zero-proof serves offer alternatives without alcohol.

The same philosophy extends to Goonj's design. The space brings together Indian colours, textures, motifs and visual details while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic. Instead of recreating a traditional Indian setting, the design draws from recognisable elements and reinterprets them for a modern dining environment.

At the centre of Goonj's proposition is the relationship between food, drink and memory. An ingredient can trigger an aroma, a colour can recall a place, and a familiar flavour can bring back an experience that may otherwise remain difficult to describe.

For a new-generation Indian dining destination, the idea offers a different way of approaching familiarity, not by reproducing the past, but by using it as inspiration for something new.
