Gujarat’s tourism industry continues to flourish, welcoming an impressive 18.59 crore tourists in 2023-24, marking a substantial 24% increase from the previous year, according to Gujarat Tourism Minister Mulubhai Bera. The state has become a preferred destination for religious, business, heritage, and leisure travelers, reflecting its diverse tourism appeal.

Minister Bera highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat has experienced remarkable growth across multiple sectors, including tourism, business, and spirituality. The efforts of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel have further propelled Gujarat's tourism industry, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

Significant Growth in Tourism

In 2023-24, Gujarat welcomed 17.50 crore domestic tourists and 23.43 lakh foreign tourists, bringing the total to over 18.59 crore visitors. Of these, 11.38 crore tourists visited for day trips, while 7.21 crore stayed overnight, significantly boosting local economies and employment opportunities.

Religious tourism continues to be a significant draw. The revered Ambaji Temple received the highest number of visitors with 1.65 crore devotees, followed by Somnath Temple with 97.93 lakh visitors, and Dwarka with 83.54 lakh pilgrims. Other key spiritual sites like the Mahakali Temple at Pavagadh and Dakor also attracted lakhs of visitors.

Business and Leisure Tourism on the Rise

Gujarat's growing reputation as a business hub is evident, with Ahmedabad recording over 2.26 crore business visitors, making it the top destination for corporate travelers. Other cities, such as Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bharuch, also saw a significant influx of business tourists, contributing to the state's dynamic business tourism sector.

In total, 192.96 lakh tourists explored Gujarat’s scenic destinations, enjoying a break from their busy lives.

Heritage Tourism Flourishes

In total, 22.49 lakh tourists explored Gujarat's historical and cultural treasures in 2023-24, reinforcing the state's importance in heritage tourism.

Expanding Tourism Infrastructure

To sustain and boost tourism, the Gujarat government is actively developing new tourist destinations. Initiatives include the Border Tourism project at Nadabet, the Sea Border Viewing Project at Sir Creek in Kutch, and the Greater Gir Development Project, which focuses on the Asiatic lions and Gir’s surrounding areas. The state is also enhancing Shivrajpur Beach to meet international Blue Flag standards, attracting more international visitors.

With continuous investments in tourism infrastructure, including the Dinosaur Fossil Park in Balasinor and the Wetland Development Project at Mokarsagar, Gujarat is well-positioned to attract even more tourists in the coming years.

As Gujarat's tourism continues to grow, it not only showcases the state's cultural, spiritual, and natural beauty but also provides increased employment opportunities for locals, ensuring a bright future for the state's economy and its people.

Switzerland Tourism Targets Indian Travellers for Autumn & Winter Getaways

Switzerland Tourism Targets Indian Travellers for Autumn & Winter Getaways

Switzerland has long been a summer favourite for Indian travellers, with many flocking to the Alpine nation during May and June. However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable shift. More Indian tourists—particularly couples, friends, and solo adventurers—are now embracing Switzerland’s autumn and winter offerings, drawn by the stunning landscapes, festive experiences, and cooler, crowd-free environments.

This emerging trend was highlighted at a press event hosted by Switzerland Tourism at the residence of Martin Maier, Consul General of Switzerland, in Mumbai. Key speakers included Martin Nydegger, CEO of Switzerland Tourism, Christian Schoch, Director India, and Ritu Sharma, Deputy Director and Marketing Head for India. They shared insights into the growing appeal of off-peak seasons and the nation’s strategy to promote year-round tourism.

With over 602,000 overnight stays recorded in 2023, India is now Switzerland’s seventh-largest foreign market, and this figure is expected to grow significantly, with projections of over 900,000 Indian visitors in the next five years. Martin Nydegger emphasized, "Our strategy for India is clear: ‘Travel Better,’ focusing on quality, longer stays, and promoting the Swiss Travel System. India is a key market, and we are steering travellers towards exploring Switzerland in all seasons, not just summer."

Indian travellers are now opting for unique experiences during autumn, such as enjoying the picturesque fall foliage or winter festivities like Christmas markets, snow-shoeing, sledging, and scenic winter excursions. Historically viewed as a skiing destination during winter, Switzerland is now drawing attention for its diverse non-skiing activities, broadening its appeal for Indian tourists.

Christian Schoch, Director India at Switzerland Tourism, noted, "Switzerland is not just a summer destination for Indian travellers. Autumn and winter provide unique experiences, from fall foliage to Christmas markets. We want Indian tourists to enjoy the beauty of these seasons as much as they love our summers."

image

Popular Swiss cities such as Zurich, Lucerne, and Interlaken are now actively promoting their autumn and winter attractions. Zurich, typically known for its financial hub status, transforms into an autumn paradise with its vibrant colours and cool temperatures. Lucerne lights up with Christmas festivities and the LiLu Light Festival, while Interlaken continues to draw adventure enthusiasts with year-round activities like paragliding and kayaking.

Collaborations with global icons like Roger Federer and Indian ambassador Neeraj Chopra are further boosting awareness of these seasonal wonders. Chopra, who fronts the winter campaign, brings a familiar face to Indian audiences, encouraging them to explore Switzerland’s less crowded seasons.

Moreover, Switzerland’s focus on sustainable travel aligns with the ‘Travel Better’ campaign, which encourages longer stays and the use of the eco-friendly Swiss Travel System. With these initiatives, Switzerland aims to deepen the connection between Indian travellers and its local culture, ensuring the country remains a top destination across seasons.

Switzerland’s commitment to promoting its year-round appeal is clear, and with India emerging as one of its fastest-growing markets, autumn and winter are set to become as popular as summer among Indian tourists.

From the vibrant beaches of North Goa like Baga and Anjuna to the peaceful stretches of South Goa such as Palolem, a scooter gives you the freedom to enjoy Goa without relying on costly taxis.

5. Enjoy Free or Low-Cost Activities

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Goa that won’t break the bank. Spend your days lounging on the beach, visiting historic churches and temples, or exploring nature trails. Many landmarks, such as the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral, are free to enter, offering a glimpse into Goa’s rich history.

For more relaxation, consider attending yoga sessions or live music nights hosted at Boho By The Beach, where you can unwind and soak in Goa’s bohemian spirit without spending too much.
