Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has announced the signing of a greenfield project for a 300-key Taj hotel in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, further expanding its presence across the state and strengthening its portfolio in spiritual and leisure destinations.

The upcoming Taj Rameshwaram will be developed in phases across 70 acres and will combine accommodation, wellness, dining, meetings and recreational facilities. The project is being developed in partnership with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited.

Commenting on the signing, Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate & Development, IHCL, said, “Rameswaram is among India’s most prominent spiritual destinations, attracting travellers from across the country and overseas. With growing infrastructure and improving connectivity, the destination presents significant potential for religious, spiritual, leisure and MICE tourism. We are delighted to partner with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited for this project and bring the Taj experience to Rameswaram.”

Taj Rameswaram to Feature 300 Keys

The planned resort will offer a range of facilities designed to cater to leisure travellers, pilgrims, wellness seekers and MICE groups.

The property will include a wellness centre, along with two speciality restaurants, a bar lounge and a pool bar. For conferences, meetings and social occasions, the hotel will feature spacious banquet venues, convention spaces and meeting rooms.

Recreational facilities will include a swimming pool, fitness centre and spa with multiple treatment rooms, adding a wellness and leisure component to the development.

Rajesh Jograj Bafna, Director, Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited, said, “We are delighted to partner with IHCL to bring the Taj brand to Rameswaram. This partnership marks an important milestone in our hospitality journey and we look forward to contributing to the region’s tourism potential.”

Strategic Location Near Pamban Bridge

The resort will be located on the mainland with direct beach access and connectivity to NH87, in proximity to the iconic Pamban Bridge.

Rameshwaram is a major spiritual destination, with the revered Ramanathaswamy Temple drawing pilgrims from across India and overseas. The temple is among the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and is also associated with the twelve Jyotirlingas.

The destination is connected to regional centres including Madurai and Tiruchirappalli. Ongoing and proposed infrastructure projects are expected to further improve accessibility to the region.

These include the expansion of NH87 into a four-lane highway, redevelopment of the railway station and a proposed domestic airport in the region. The developments are expected to support Rameshwaram’s growing appeal for spiritual, leisure and tourism-related travel.

IHCL Expands Tamil Nadu Portfolio

With the addition of Taj Rameshwaram, IHCL will have 35 hotels in Tamil Nadu, including 16 under development, strengthening its presence across one of South India’s key tourism markets.

The project adds to the company’s strategy of expanding its brands across established destinations as well as locations with growing tourism and connectivity potential.
