Kerala Tourism is embarking on an extraordinary venture called 'Ethnic Villages,' offering tourists a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the state's diverse ethnic culture without intruding on local communities' lives and ecosystems. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), will debut in the picturesque Idukki district.

The project's core concept revolves around establishing an ethnic village on a spacious two-acre DTPC property. Here, visitors will be able to explore and engage with traditional art, savor indigenous cuisine, admire intricate handicrafts, and experience the vibrant cultural expressions of Kerala's Scheduled Tribes.

For the project's initial phase, the state government has committed a substantial budget of INR 1.27 crore, signifying the significance of preserving and showcasing Kerala's ethnic heritage.

Tourism Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas expressed, "This pioneering initiative will introduce the world to the distinctive facets of Kerala's ethnic culture." Moreover, he underscored that the project's scope extends beyond tourism, as it also plays a vital role in conserving the lifestyle, ecosystems, and heritage of ethnic communities. It offers an authentic and immersive experience of the state's rich tapestry of diverse ethnic cultures.

The 'ethnic village' is designed to offer accommodations inspired by tribal homes, seamlessly blending tradition with modern amenities. It will be thoughtfully segregated into two sections: a tourism activity zone and an accommodation zone, providing visitors with an authentic and comfortable stay.

This initiative presents a respectful and captivating way for tourists to partake in Kerala's rich cultural diversity while ensuring the well-being of local communities and preserving the environment. By doing so, it's a win-win for both travelers and the ethnic communities in this beautiful part of India.
