Korean Air is set to begin offering free high-speed internet through SpaceX's Starlink satellite network from September 15, becoming the first full-service carrier in East Asia to adopt the technology.
The airline will initially introduce Starlink Wi-Fi on four retrofitted aircraft, comprising three Airbus A350-900s and one Boeing 777-300ER. These aircraft will primarily operate on long-haul routes to the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia, along with selected short-haul services.
Korean Air plans to expand Starlink connectivity across most of its fleet by the end of 2027. Aircraft that have not yet been equipped with the satellite technology will continue to offer the airline's existing paid Wi-Fi service during the transition.
The new service will be available free of charge across all cabin classes, giving passengers access to high-speed connectivity during their flights.
Passengers will be able to connect by switching their devices to airplane mode, joining the onboard Wi-Fi network and entering the name on their boarding pass along with their seat number.
According to Korean Air, the Starlink upgrade will significantly improve connection speeds compared with traditional inflight internet services. Passengers will be able to stream video and music, browse the internet, play online games and use cloud-based collaboration tools at speeds designed to provide an experience closer to ground-level connectivity.
Commenting on the introduction, a Korean Air company official said, “As East Asia’s first full-service carrier to adopt Starlink, we expect to transform the onboard experience. Cabins once cut off from the outside world will now match ground-level connectivity.”
The airline, however, will continue to restrict certain types of online activity. Voice and video calls and live social media streaming will not be permitted, with Korean Air citing security and cabin comfort considerations. Access to insecure or illegal websites will also be blocked.
The Starlink rollout comes as airlines increasingly look to improve inflight connectivity and make internet access a more integrated part of the passenger experience. For Korean Air, the planned expansion across most of its fleet represents a significant investment in digital connectivity as travellers increasingly expect reliable internet access while flying.
With the initial launch scheduled for September 15 and broader deployment planned through 2027, Korean Air is positioning high-speed connectivity as another part of its efforts to modernise the inflight experience.
