Leadership Change at WTTCII: Deep Kalra Takes the Helm for 2024-2025 Term

In a significant announcement, the World Travel and Tourism Council, India Initiative (WTTCII), has appointed Deep Kalra, Founder & Chairman of MakeMyTrip India Pvt. Ltd, as Chairperson and Dr. Jyotsna Suri, Chairperson & Managing Director of the Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, as Vice Chairperson for the upcoming term from 2024 to 2025.

Deep Kalra expressed his respect for WTTCII's distinguished heritage and visionary initiatives, emphasizing the organization's commendable 23-year legacy. Kalra highlighted the importance of collaborating with states, citing their active engagement with the Goa Tourism Board and a recently formalized strategic MoU with the Government of West Bengal to craft a comprehensive marketing and PR roadmap. He stressed the need for impactful partnerships with states and active collaboration to contribute insights to the central government's priorities, aligning with Prime Minister Modi and the Ministry of Tourism initiatives.

Dr. Jyotsna Suri reflected on the evolution of India's tourism landscape since the inception of WTTCII in 2000. She commended the substantial progress made under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of Tourism, emphasizing the organization's commitment to contributing to the ongoing tourism revolution. Dr. Suri highlighted the recent whitepaper, 'Policy Reforms for Indian Hotel and Hospitality Sector,' calling upon states to streamline business environments, foster increased investments, employment, and local livelihood opportunities.

The leadership change sees Deep Kalra taking over from Dinesh Khanna, Executive Director of Eastern International Hotels Ltd, who served as Chairman of WTTCII for the 2022-2023 term. The appointments aim to leverage the collective expertise within the membership base to elevate tourism initiatives, especially at the state level. WTTCII's emphasis on advancing tourism initiatives within states aligns with their goal of stimulating local tourism economies.

In related developments, former Union Secretary of Tourism and Secretary General of WTTCII, Sujit Banerjee, has joined the Advisory Board of the GSTC India Working Group. Banerjee expressed enthusiasm for advancing India's tourism sustainability agenda, aiming to position the country as a global focal point for sustainability initiatives through collaborative efforts.

As Deep Kalra assumes the role of Chairperson and Dr. Jyotsna Suri takes on the responsibilities of Vice Chairperson, WTTCII looks forward to continued contributions to India's tourism growth and sustainability. As India’s largest DoubleTree by Hilton, the hotel plays a strategic role within the brand’s national portfolio.

In his new capacity, Sadanandan will steer overall strategy and daily operations, focusing on business expansion while safeguarding the brand’s globally recognised service benchmarks. His mandate spans complete operational oversight, enhancing guest experiences, strengthening revenue performance, leading sales and marketing initiatives, and cultivating a results-driven team culture.

A seasoned hospitality professional, he brings extensive expertise in hotel operations, revenue optimisation, business development and talent management. Under his leadership, the hotel aims to reinforce its positioning as a preferred airport address by introducing innovative food and beverage offerings and advancing sustainable operating practices, while continuing to deliver DoubleTree’s signature warm hospitality.

Prior to this role, he served as Head of MICE Sales at ITC Hotels in Gurugram and as General Manager at Renaissance Hotel Lucknow. His earlier assignments include Director of Operations at Le Méridien Gurugram and leadership roles across Marriott International.

With over 20 years of experience in premium and luxury hospitality, Rahul brings strong operational depth across both resort and city hotel environments. He has also served in senior operational roles at Conrad Pune and The Westin Mumbai Powai Lake, where he managed diverse business segments while balancing guest satisfaction, team engagement and commercial performance.

Known for his grounded and people-first leadership style, Rahul believes that empowered teams and thoughtful execution form the foundation of great hospitality, an approach influenced by his upbringing in Rajasthan and a family background rooted in education and agriculture.

Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel has announced the appointment of Andy Tan as General Manager as the design-led lifestyle property prepares for its opening in April 2026 in the Selegie–Mount Sophia precinct. The 128-room boutique hotel, positioned as the Southeast Asia flagship of Tribute Portfolio by Marriott International, marks a significant milestone for the brand in the region.

Andy brings more than three decades of hospitality and travel experience, combining operational leadership with commercial strategy. He will oversee the hotel’s pre-opening phase, including team building, service culture development, brand alignment and go-to-market planning across key segments and distribution channels, with a strong emphasis on people development and guest experience delivery.

Conceived as an “urban oasis” rooted in neighbourhood connection and creative energy, Varel Singapore aims to establish a distinctive presence within Singapore’s boutique hospitality landscape. Over the course of his career, Andy has held senior regional and global roles across Asia Pacific and Europe with leading hospitality groups such as Millennium Hotels & Resorts, Pan Pacific Hotels Group, Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. His expertise spans hotels, serviced residences, lifestyle concepts, food and beverage operations, strategic partnerships and B2B and B2C distribution. Most recently, he served in a senior leadership role at Millennium Hotels & Resorts, supporting commercial performance and operational alignment across its global portfolio.

Beyond his executive responsibilities, Andy serves on the Board of Directors of the Employment and Employability Institute and contributes to the Sustainability and Technical Committees of the Singapore Hotel Association, advancing workforce development and operational excellence across the sector. He holds a Master’s degree in International Hospitality & Service Management from Glion Institute of Higher Education and is fluent in English, Mandarin, Thai, Malay and several Chinese dialects.
