Mauritius is strengthening its focus on the Indian travel market as tourist arrivals from India continue to grow. From January to July 2026, the island welcomed 51,005 Indian visitors, registering a 14.5 per cent year-on-year increase.

The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) recently connected with travel professionals across Pune, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad as part of its latest India marketing initiative. This was the third such marketing operation by MTPA in India since January 2026, highlighting the country's importance as a key tourism market for Mauritius.

The four-city initiative brought together more than 20 tourism partners from Mauritius, including hotels, DMCs and airlines. The sessions focused on showcasing Mauritius beyond its well-known beaches, honeymoons and weddings, with travel professionals getting a closer look at options across leisure, family travel, luxury, MICE, wellness, golf, gastronomy and adventure.

The initiative was also held ahead of the upcoming travel season, giving travel advisors an opportunity to understand the latest offerings and plan more varied Mauritius itineraries for their clients.

For Indian travellers, Mauritius offers a mix of beaches, culture, nature, adventure, gastronomy, wellness and wildlife. Attractions and experiences such as Grand Bassin, Aapravasi Ghat, Chamarel, Black River Gorges, Le Morne Brabant and Casela offer visitors the chance to explore the island beyond its coastline.

“India is much more than an important tourism market for Mauritius; it is a market with which we share deep cultural and historical connections. The warmth and familiarity between our two countries create a natural bond that extends into travel. Our engagement across Pune, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad was an opportunity to strengthen this relationship, understand the evolving Indian traveller and showcase the different facets of Mauritius. By engaging with the market ahead of the travel season, we wanted to give our partners the time and confidence to plan and promote Mauritius more effectively.” says Benoit Harter, Director, India, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.

Mauritius also benefits from visa-free access for Indian passport holders, with the visa issued free of charge on arrival at the airport. Direct connectivity from India is supported by three carriers, Air Mauritius, IndiGo and Air India, connecting Indian cities to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, the gateway to the island.

The destination's multicultural and multilingual character further adds to its appeal among Indian travellers. English, French, Creole, Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely spoken, while Indian cuisine, festivals and places of worship are part of everyday life in Mauritius.

MTPA is also seeing interest from a wider mix of Indian travellers. Younger, experience-driven travellers are exploring the island for adventure, nature and nightlife, while wellness and spiritually inclined travellers are looking at Mauritius for health-conscious and transformative experiences. Couples and corporate groups continue to explore the destination for weddings and MICE programmes, supported by resort venues, event capacity and direct connectivity.

MTPA will continue its India strategy through trade partnerships, familiarisation trips for travel agents, media initiatives and targeted activity across major cities and emerging travel markets. The focus remains on positioning Mauritius as a diverse, accessible and year-round destination for Indian travellers.
