Lonavala's familiar journey through the Sahyadris has long been associated with monsoon drives, steaming cups of chai, roadside corn and memorable meals along the way. Now, that connection with food and travel is entering a new chapter with the launch of Mirari, a culinary bungalow in the hills that brings together the nostalgia of Lonavala with contemporary dining.
Mirari draws inspiration from the region's landscape, history and long-standing food culture, while paying tribute to Sunny Da Dhaba, a name that has been part of the Lonavala journey for generations. Known for its Butter Chicken, traditional khatiya seating and warm hospitality, Sunny Da Dhaba has built a strong connection with travellers visiting the region.
Mirari builds on that legacy through a destination designed around food, drinks and relaxed experiences. Its philosophy, "Eat. Sip. Unwind.", reflects the idea of giving guests a place to pause, reconnect and spend time in the hills rather than simply stopping for a meal.
The name Mirari, derived from a word meaning to wonder, reflects the sense of discovery associated with Lonavala, from mist-covered mountains and monsoon landscapes to the quiet beauty of the Sahyadris.
The culinary bungalow houses two distinct dining experiences - Leni and Avaali, each with its own identity.
Leni takes inspiration from Lonavala's heritage and evolving café culture. The name refers to the ancient Buddhist cave sanctuaries, or lenis, that form part of the region's history.
The café is designed around slow mornings, artisanal coffee, comforting bakes and relaxed conversations. Its menu combines familiar favourites with local influences, including the Burrata Margherita Flatbread, Corn Bhaji with Poached Egg and Pulled Lamb Leg Sandwich.
For those with a sweet tooth, the menu features Lonavala's Famous Walnut Fudge Crêpes and Sticky Toffee Ginger Pudding. The beverage selection includes signatures such as Morning After Cold Brew and Mogra Cooler, complementing the café's laid-back approach.
Inspired by the hills and valleys surrounding Lonavala, Avaali presents contemporary Indian cuisine rooted in traditional flavours and techniques.
The menu brings together familiar Sunny Da Dhaba favourites with modern interpretations, including 100 Layer Sindhi Aloo Tukk, Kerala Prawn Pepper Fry Cigars and Truffle & Herb Kothambir Wadi. The offering also retains some of the legacy dishes associated with the region, including the OG Butter Chicken, alongside the indulgent Mirari Falooda.
Avaali's beverage programme adds another layer to the experience with inventive cocktails. The Aamlet offers a contemporary interpretation of the classic aam panna, while Fudge, made with Baileys coffee liqueur, draws inspiration from Lonavala's well-known fudge culture.
Together, Leni and Avaali offer different ways to experience the destination, from leisurely café visits and coffee breaks to family meals, cocktails and longer evenings around the table.
For founder Sharad Wadhwani, Mirari represents a personal connection with Lonavala and the memories associated with the destination.
"Lonavala has always been more than a getaway, it is where memories are made. With Mirari, we wanted to create a grand bungalow in the hills that honours the warmth and legacy of Sunny Da Dhaba while offering a fresh dining experience for today's traveller. This is our way of giving back to a place that has given us so much."
With its combination of regional nostalgia, contemporary food and a destination-led setting, Mirari aims to become part of the Lonavala experience for both regular visitors and travellers discovering the hills.
