one8 Commune Bangalore is excited to introduce Commune Collective with its debut event, “At the Pass with Varun Pereira,” taking place on August 3rd and 4th. This special chef pop-up, part of a new series aimed at bringing unique global dining experiences to Bangalore, will feature an authentic Mexican street food celebration.

Chef Varun Pereira, known for his roles at Lupa and Sly Granny, partners with one8 Commune’s Corporate Chef Agnibh Mudi to present a menu inspired by Chef Varun’s recent travels to Mexico. The pop-up will showcase a range of dishes including fresh tacos, sizzling birria, taquitos, and camarones. These will be paired with tequila cocktails from Don Julio and finished off with inventive desserts.

Chef Pereira is enthusiastic about the event, stating, “I am very excited about this collaboration with one8 Commune and to be the first to kick off their Commune Collective series. Chef Agnibh has been the perfect partner as his innovative ideas and cooking style complement mine very well. My journey through Mexico was a revelation, and this menu is a tribute to its rich culinary heritage.”

Chef Mudi shares this excitement, noting, “Teaming up with Chef Varun has been nothing short of exciting. Our shared passion for authentic flavors has resulted in a menu that is both new and exciting. This collaboration allows us to offer something truly special to our guests.”

The pop-up promises an interactive dining experience with a Chef’s Bar where guests can watch tacos being prepared, a Live Taco Station for custom tacos, and a DIY Nacho Bar with various sauces and toppings.

Guests can also enjoy a selection of Don Julio cocktails crafted by Head Mixologist Sandesh Krishna, including the Paloma, Cilantro Watermelon Picante, and Clarified Alphonso Rita. Unique frozen cocktails will add a refreshing twist to the evening. For dessert, the Corn Tac-Oh! combines Ulo Ice Cream’s sweet corn ice cream with a crispy waffle taco, topped with spicy chili caramel popcorn or chocolate crumble.

India has slashed tariffs on bourbon whisky imports from 150% to 100%, a move that will benefit American liquor brands like Jim Beam. The tariff revision, which was notified on February 13 but gained media attention later, comes amid intensifying criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding India's trade policies.

Trump, who recently met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, has repeatedly called out India’s high import duties as unfair to American businesses. He also announced a reciprocal tariff policy targeting countries imposing heavy levies on U.S. exports.

The new structure imposes a basic customs duty of 50% with an additional 50% levy, bringing the total duty to 100% for bourbon whisky. Other imported liquor products remain unchanged at 150% tariffs.

Experts believe the decision reflects India's willingness to adjust trade policies for strategic partners. Pratik Jain, partner at PwC India, noted that the move could signal India’s openness to tariff revisions for key allies.

India’s $35 billion spirits market is home to major global players like Diageo and Pernod Ricard, who have long criticized the country’s high import tariffs. Vinod Giri, Director General of the Brewers Association of India, stated that while bourbon whisky holds symbolic trade value, the decision is likely aimed at easing tensions with the U.S. and preventing retaliatory trade measures.

As India seeks deeper integration into the global economy, the reduction in bourbon whisky tariffs may be the first step in broader trade realignments.
