Rann Utsav – The Tent City, a beacon of cultural celebration and tourism, is set to open its doors to a world of enchantment on November 10, 2023. This grand event, which will unfold in the picturesque village of Dhordo in Gujarat, is more than just a festival; it is a culmination of art, culture, and tradition, offering an array of over 400 luxurious tents for around 500,000 guests anticipated throughout the festivities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a fervent advocate of Rann Utsav, drawing attention to the rich cultural tapestry and scenic splendor of Dhordo village. His reflections on his visits to the village in 2009 and 2015 highlight the global recognition of Dhordo’s cultural heritage and natural allure. He has praised the people of Kutch for their unwavering dedication and efforts that have contributed to this global acclaim.

The festival not only celebrates the cultural magnificence of the region but also stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts between Evoke Experiences, Gujarat Tourism, and the local villagers. Bhavik Sheth, COO of Evoke Experiences, emphasizes the honor of hosting Rann Utsav and the collective anticipation of contributing to the region's advancement.

In light of this, PM Modi has extended a heartfelt invitation to individuals to share their treasured memories of Dhordo, further enriching the narrative of the village. Dhordo, nestled in the vast expanse of the Great Rann of Kutch, has recently been awarded the title of “Best Tourism Village” by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), making it the sole recipient of this honor from India.

The annual Rann Utsav serves as a vibrant showcase of the region’s traditional arts, music, and crafts, providing visitors with a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the area. This year’s Rann Utsav is a manifestation of India’s tourism potential and the enduring spirit of its local communities.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 162 million loan to support sustainable and inclusive tourism development in Himachal Pradesh. This initiative will significantly enhance the state's tourism potential by upgrading key heritage sites, promoting cultural centers, and improving overall tourism infrastructure.

Vivek Vishal, ADB Senior Project Officer, highlighted ADB's commitment to the state's tourism growth, stating, "ADB is committed to supporting Himachal Pradesh in developing its tourism and promoting economic growth. This project will not only boost tourism but also benefit local communities and preserve cultural heritage."

Enhancing Heritage and Infrastructure

The project will focus on revitalizing heritage and cultural sites, with particular attention to Mandi and Hamirpur districts, as well as restoring the historic Naggar Castle in Kullu. Public spaces will also be beautified as part of this initiative. In addition, a convention center will be constructed in Kangra, and improved wayside amenities will be introduced in Kullu, Hamirpur, and Kangra districts.

One of the standout features of the project is the incorporation of green solutions, such as solar lighting and electric vehicles, aimed at making tourism more sustainable. In addition to upgrading heritage sites, the project will establish wellness centers, tourist recreation facilities, a dedicated adventure sports center, a water park complex, and biking trails. These facilities are expected to boost tourism while creating new employment opportunities for local communities, further driving economic growth in the region.

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board will also benefit from ADB’s assistance in developing a comprehensive tourism strategy and marketing plan. The project will support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) through training and skills development, ensuring that local communities are equipped to offer high-quality tourism services.

Sustainable Future for Himachal Pradesh Tourism

To ensure long-term success, ADB will help enhance district-level tourism management, assisting them in developing strategic destination plans and managing tourist sites more effectively. This holistic approach will not only bolster the state's tourism appeal but also preserve its cultural and natural heritage for future generations.
