The recently-concluded International Conference on "Soy Foods: Sustainable Protein for Health and Wellness" has concluded with significant recommendations for government support to promote soy food production, consumption, and entrepreneurship in India. The conference participants emphasized the acceptance of soy foods as a mainstream protein source and proposed various measures to foster growth and innovation within the industry.

The key government support recommendations include establishing standards and nomenclature for soy food products to ensure consistency and safety. It is suggested to include a representative from the Soy Food Promotion and Welfare Association (SFPWA) in relevant standards and scientific committees. Corrections to the existing tofu standards by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) should be addressed to improve quality and competitiveness.

Clear guidelines and appropriate tax rates for soy foods under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) are recommended to create a conducive business environment. Lowering customs duty on soybean imports would encourage cost-effectiveness and availability for domestic production. Seeking health claims from the Government of India through the Ministry of Health will validate the nutritional benefits of soy food consumption.

Promoting soy food consumption through generic campaigns in print and electronic media will raise awareness and preference for nutritious soy products. Including soy protein ingredients in the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme will incentivize their use in food manufacturing and drive market growth.

These recommendations have the potential to transform soybean production, entrepreneurship, and healthier diets in India. By implementing these measures and leveraging the expertise of all stakeholders, India can become a leader in soy food production, consumption, and overall health and wellness.
