Rameswaram, one of Tamil Nadu’s most visited tourist spots, is set to become even more attractive to nature enthusiasts. The state government is currently developing a sprawling 125-acre eco-tourism centre near Ramar Padham, at a place called Kallangadu.
This new nature destination will offer trekking experiences through a green forest landscape, a move aimed at promoting sustainable tourism on the island. The land, managed by the state forest department, is undergoing major transformation. Now the harmful Vachellia nilotica trees are being removed, and saplings of native trees are being planted to turn the space into a lush, walkable green zone.
Rameswaram already draws over 30 million visitors each year who come to see iconic locations like Ramanathaswamy Temple, Ramar Padham, Dhanushkodi, and Kurusadai Island. With this upcoming eco-tourism hub, officials aim to provide something fresh for repeat travelers and eco-conscious tourists.
The project has received a financial boost of ₹75 lakh from the government, and the groundwork is progressing rapidly. If things go as planned, visitors may be able to explore the new trekking paths and forest trails as early as next year.
Officials are hopeful that the eco-tourism zone will not only enhance tourist experiences but also contribute to the environmental health of the island by expanding green cover and promoting mindful travel.
