Exciting news for Thailand as UNESCO officially designates 'Songkran in Thailand, Traditional Thai New Year Festival,' as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. This recognition adds another jewel to Thailand's cultural crown, joining esteemed traditions like Khon (2018), Thai Massage (2019), and Nora (2021).

Songkran, marking the sun's transition into the Aries constellation, symbolizes the Thai New Year. Celebrated in mid-April after the rice harvest, it's a time for family reunions, paying respects to elders, ancestors, and sacred Buddha images. Central to the festivities is the act of pouring water, representing cleansing, reverence, and good fortune. Other activities include bathing Buddha images, water splashing, folk plays, music, and feasting.

Songkran promotes community cooperation, unity, and forgiveness. It's a symbolic cleansing to wash away misfortunes, pray for prosperity, reunite with family, and honor ancestors. The emphasis on family and respect for elders addresses issues of loneliness and social isolation within the community.

Thailand celebrates Songkran's inclusion in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, alongside other revered traditions. This recognition is a testament to Thailand's rich cultural heritage and traditions. The festival's designation is expected to attract more international visitors eager to experience this unique celebration firsthand. It's an opportunity to understand the essence of Thai traditions and create lasting memories.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin extends a warm welcome to tourists worldwide, inviting them to participate and experience the grandeur of the Songkran festival. With UNESCO's recognition, Songkran 2024 promises even more amazing celebrations, blending boisterous fun with ancient traditions.

As Songkran takes its place among UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage, Thailand invites everyone to join the festivities, immerse themselves in tradition, and celebrate the cultural richness of this unique and cherished festival.
