The Spanish Tourist Office has taken a significant step towards improving tourism accessibility by hosting its inaugural advisory panel on accessibility. This initiative is part of the broader 'Spain for All' campaign, which aims to position Spain as a leading destination for accessible travel. The panel brought together a diverse group of experts, including travel industry professionals, accessibility consultants, and individuals from the disabled community.
Moderated by Angus Drummond, founder of Limitless Travel and a leading advocate for accessible travel, the first session focused on actionable solutions to overcome accessibility challenges in tourism. Drummond, whose personal journey with Muscular Dystrophy inspired his commitment to accessible tourism, led the panel through discussions on various pertinent topics such as the importance of feedback loops, overcoming informational barriers, and leveraging digital platforms for better accessibility.
Manuel Butler, Director of the Spanish Tourist Office, expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, "Launching this advisory panel marks a crucial milestone in our commitment to enhancing accessibility across all Spanish destinations. It's inspiring to collaborate with such knowledgeable individuals who bring invaluable perspectives to our strategy."
The session highlighted several key areas for development, including:
Enhancing the feedback loop between service providers and users to refine services.
Sharing best practices to alleviate fears and misconceptions about accessible travel.
Developing a comprehensive digital accessibility blueprint.
Understanding the implications of government legislation on accessible tourism.
Recognizing and fostering the commercial potential of investing in accessible travel facilities.
The advisory panel is just the first in a series of three planned sessions, each designed to build on the progress of the last and push forward the agenda of making Spain an accessible destination for all. With a robust panel comprising experts like Atlyn Forde, CEO of Communicate Inclusively, and Angie Hills, Head of Destinations at ABTA, the Spanish Tourist Office is well-equipped to integrate expert advice into actionable strategies.
Panel members also include industry leaders from various sectors, such as Ben Kirby of Enable Holidays and Marina Snellingberg of TUI, reflecting the collaborative effort required to advance this important cause. With such a comprehensive approach, the 'Spain for All' campaign is set to influence not only national but international standards for accessible tourism.
The Spanish Tourist Office anticipates further fruitful discussions in the upcoming sessions, aiming to integrate these insights into a cohesive accessibility strategy that benefits all stakeholders in the tourism industry.
