Sri Lanka Extends Visa-Free Entry for Tourists from India and Select Countries

In a significant move to rejuvenate its tourism sector, Sri Lanka has extended its visa-free entry policy for travelers from India and several other countries. The Sri Lankan Cabinet recently confirmed the continuation of this policy, initially launched as a pilot project in October, to facilitate easier access for tourists from India, China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, all allowed a 30-day visit.

Visitors from these countries, however, are required to apply for their visas online via the official portal www.srilankaevisa.lk before arriving in Sri Lanka. This online application process aims to streamline entry procedures and enhance the travel experience, with the free visa having a validity of 30 days.

The decision to renew the visa-free entry scheme aligns with Sri Lanka's broader efforts to rebuild its tourism industry, which has been one of the hardest-hit sectors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic challenges, and political instability. The move is expected to increase tourist arrivals and stimulate economic recovery by making the island nation more accessible to international visitors.

Additionally, amidst recent controversies over visa issuance fees, the Sri Lankan Cabinet has decided to maintain a USD 50 fee for travelers obtaining a visa on arrival for 30 days. This decision comes after proposals to outsource the visa-issuing process to a private company, which would have raised the fee to USD 100, were met with widespread criticism from various stakeholders within the tourism industry. The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka also clarified that no Indian firms were involved in the problematic visa issuance at Bandaranaike International Airport.

By ensuring the visa fee remains capped at a reasonable rate and simplifying the visa process, Sri Lanka is making concerted efforts to restore its position as a desirable tourist destination, encouraging more travelers to explore its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
