Starbucks Reserve has launched Monsooned Malabar, a single-origin coffee that captures the unique flavors of Southern India’s monsoon-soaked Malabar coast. This limited-edition Arabica blend celebrates India’s coffee culture, blending artistry and dedication from local coffee farmers into each cup. Known for its distinct flavor profile, Monsooned Malabar offers coffee enthusiasts notes of earthy sweetness, chocolate, dried spices, and a smooth malty finish.
The coffee beans for Monsooned Malabar are sourced from the Chikmagalur highlands, an area renowned for its fertile coffee-growing conditions. Following the harvest, these coffee cherries are taken to the Malabar coast, where they undergo a traditional monsooning process that sets this coffee apart. During monsooning, beans are exposed to coastal winds and seasonal rains for up to six months. They are meticulously raked and turned to absorb humidity evenly, resulting in beans that swell, take on a light tan color, and develop a reduced acidity with enhanced depth of flavor.
Monsooned Malabar is further distinguished by its Geographical Indication (GI) tag, a certification that highlights its authentic origin and quality. The GI tag adds to the coffee’s prestige, confirming that each sip reflects the region's unique growing conditions and processing techniques.
Sushant Dash, CEO of TATA Starbucks, expressed excitement about introducing this blend to Indian coffee lovers. “The growth of India’s specialty coffee market is driven by a new generation of enthusiasts seeking premium experiences,” he shared. “At Starbucks Reserve, we focus on coffee excellence, and the monsooning process is a time-honored Indian tradition that results in a distinctive coffee with bold flavors. We are thrilled to showcase India’s rich coffee heritage globally, creating an elevated experience for consumers both nationally and worldwide.”
The Monsooned Malabar is now available across 19 Starbucks Reserve stores in India and is priced at INR 2400, with availability limited to current stock.
