The official launch of the International Green Key Certification Scheme for Hotels and Tourism Facilities took place on August 8, 2023. This is a significant step forward for India's tourism sector, which has been displaying encouraging growth trends, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Spearheaded by the Foundation for Environment Education (FEE) Copenhagen, this initiative is set to transform the landscape of responsible tourism in the country.

Aim and Approach

The key aim of introducing the Green Key certification is to strengthen the tourism sector while fostering exceptional employment prospects for the youth. This initiative is dedicated to promoting sustainable practices and preserving India's abundant cultural heritage. With a keen focus on enhancing responsible tourism, this move reflects India's commitment to aligning with global environmental standards.

The launch event witnessed the presence of esteemed figures such as Daniel Schaffer, CEO of FEE Copenhagen, Dr. Jagat Mangaraj, National Operator of Green Key India, and Padmashri Kartikeya V Sarabhai, Director of the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), among others. Notably, the Green Key certification holds the backing of major international hotel brands like Accor, Radisson, IHG, and Marriott, marking their commitment to sustainable operations.

Green Key certification signifies a remarkable achievement in environmental responsibility and sustainable operations, particularly for hotels and tourism establishments. By creating a framework that encourages strategic and sustainable outcomes, this certification fosters responsible tourism practices across the country. With over 4000 establishments already certified globally in 60 countries, the introduction of Green Key in India promises to be a game-changer.

Going Beyond Environmental Impact

What sets Green Key apart is its holistic approach. While environmental sustainability remains a central focus, the certification also emphasizes social aspects. From employee contracts and welfare to accessibility for differently-abled individuals, the Green Key certification encapsulates a comprehensive commitment to all stakeholders.

With a lineup of renowned hotel groups expressing keen interest in implementing the Green Key certification, the future looks promising. However, the vision extends beyond luxury properties, aiming to involve operators across the spectrum. Launched on 15 June 2025, the new 24-room hotel reflects the brand’s sharp focus on design-led urban hospitality that appeals to both spiritual and leisure travellers.

The decision to expand came on the back of sustained high occupancy at its first Varanasi outpost, especially during major cultural and religious events.
