Tommy’s Opens on Old Airport Road: A Fresh Take on Bangalore’s Classic Neighbourhood Bar

In a city celebrated for its breweries and buzzing nightlife, Tommy’s brings back the charm of the classic neighbourhood bar—where the drinks are strong, the food is hearty, and the vibe is unapologetically Bangalore.

Located on Old Airport Road, Tommy’s is a 120-seater everyday bar that stands on a site steeped in local history. Once home to the legendary HAL Bar, later Krupa’s and Sai Krupa, this address has quenched Bangalore’s thirst since 1966. Now, it steps into a new chapter as Tommy’s, a playful tribute to its past with a fresh, kitschy spin.

“Bangalore has always had a culture of everyday drinking—not in excess, but in ease,” says Sujay Venkatesh, Founder of Tommy’s. “With Tommy’s, we wanted to bring back that spirit of no pretence, just solid food, great drinks, and a place that remembers your regular.”

Inside, Tommy’s brims with character. Cat memorabilia greets you at every corner—lounging on the bar, framed in portraits, and even welcoming guests at the entrance. The space is drenched in nostalgia with cassette-tiled walls, sticker-plastered windows, old-school music posters, and a handcrafted Rock-Ola jukebox (one of only four in the country) that happily takes your song requests.

The bar rolls out a wide range of cocktails and classic pours. Signatures like the Batanga, Tommy’s Margarita, the Suffering Bastard, and the throwback Strawberry Daiquiri shine alongside rotating draught beers and special-occasion bottles like Dom Perignon and rare Japanese whiskies.

Food at Tommy’s hits all the right notes—think classic bar bites and local favourites. From egg bhurji, bheja and gurda masala, mutton seekh, biryanis, masala papad, homestyle curries to chilli cheese naan bites, it’s designed to be easy, satisfying, and perfectly paired with your drink. A popcorn machine at the counter even nods to Bangalore’s old single-screen theatres.

Tommy’s has shed the grungy look of its predecessors for a cooler, more inviting feel. It’s still intriguing enough to keep you coming back—maybe to spin a tune on the jukebox, grab some popcorn with your beer, or cool off with a slushy spiked with spirits on a hot afternoon.

Like any good neighbourhood bar, it’s friendly on the wallet and promises to remember your regular order if you drop by often enough. Whether it’s a quick post-work drink, a long evening catching up with friends, or just a spot to play your favourite song, Tommy’s feels fresh yet familiar—ready to become a new Bangalore staple.

Tommy’s is now open seven days a week. Come for the cat energy, stay for the cocktails.

Draavin Canteen, the much-loved South Indian eatery founded by chef patron Ruchira Hoon, has opened its doors in Gurugram, marking a new phase of growth and identity. Formerly known as Dakshin Canteen in South Delhi, the restaurant has been reimagined under the name Draavin—drawn from the Sanskrit root “drav,” meaning to flow and move.

The name symbolises rivers, spice routes, and the abundance of the Dravidian south, while also reflecting the restaurant’s own journey of expansion. Speaking about the new identity, Hoon said, “Draavin is more than just a name, it is a philosophy. It celebrates prosperity, generosity, and the joy of shared meals. Expanding from South Delhi to Gurgaon is about continuing that flow, reaching more people, and sharing the soul of the south with new audiences.”

At its Gurugram location, Draavin Canteen stays true to its roots while expanding its offerings. The menu showcases diverse cuisines from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Malabar, Lakshadweep, and Sri Lanka. Diners can look forward to Chettinad curries, Kerala-style stews, coastal seafood, fiery Andhra specialties, and Sri Lankan flavours. Complementing the food are spice-forward beverages and tropical-inspired drinks.

The interiors also tell a story, designed with earthy tones, natural textures, and cultural motifs that echo the spirit of the south while fitting into a contemporary setting. The space is warm and soulful, inviting guests to experience comfort and abundance through food and atmosphere.

With this opening, Draavin Canteen evolves from a beloved neighbourhood kitchen into a growing brand that celebrates the culinary heritage and cultural richness of the Dravidian south across multiple destinations.
