The hospitality and tourism sector in India is gearing up for a significant surge in hiring, riding on the waves of robust growth observed in 2023, primarily fueled by the boom in domestic travel. The Hotel Association of India (HAI) projects a noteworthy milestone, anticipating the hotel industry's direct contribution to India's GDP to reach $1 trillion by 2047.

According to HAI Vice President K B Kachru, this projection signifies a remarkable achievement and is expected to result in a minimum 25% increase in the demand for the workforce. This growth extends beyond the hotel industry, encompassing related sectors like travel, aviation, ticket booking, travel guides, and consultants.

Kachru, also Chairman Emeritus & Principal Advisor at South Asia Radisson Hotel Group, emphasizes the transformative impact of the pandemic on the hospitality sector. He notes a paradigm shift, emphasizing adaptability, digital innovation, and an increased focus on guest safety and well-being.

Echoing these sentiments, Chalet Hotels Chief Human Resources Officer Urvi Aradhya observes a post-pandemic employment landscape marked by technological integration, a heightened emphasis on health and safety, a focus on local tourism, and a shift towards flexible work arrangements.

Recruitment agency Gi Group Vice President Sudeep Sen provides insights into the expected hiring trend, projecting a minimum 25% increase in the demand for the workforce. He identifies adjacent industries such as travel, aviation, ticket booking, and travel guides/consultants as witnessing a surge in demand, with estimated increases ranging from 15-18% depending on the seasonality of travel destinations.

Specific roles in demand include digital content creators, social media managers, sustainability consultants for hotels and resorts, vegan food & beverage specialists, and spa & healthcare specialists.

Chander K Baljee, Chairman and Managing Director of Royal Orchid Hotels, notes a significant surge in domestic travel across India. This surge has prompted an increase in the availability of accommodations across various categories, including 3-, 4-, and 5-star establishments. "With this expansion, there is also a corresponding addition to the workforce... we have proactively undertaken recruitment of fresh staff," he said.

As the hospitality industry unfolds new opportunities, the expected surge in hiring presents a positive outlook for job seekers and businesses alike. With a focus on innovation, safety, and adaptability, the industry is gearing up to shape a dynamic and resilient workforce, ready to embrace the evolving landscape of travel and hospitality.
