It seems like there's some great news for travel enthusiasts who have always wanted to explore the enchanting North East of India! The process for obtaining the Restricted Area Permits (RAP) and Protected Area Permits (PAP), which are essential for foreign tourists visiting states like Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, has been significantly simplified.
Easier Access to North East's Hidden Gems: RAP and PAP Permits Simplified
A recent report by the Hindustan Times highlighted a significant development shared by Anil Oraw, the Regional Director of the Union Ministry of Tourism. He announced that obtaining these permits for Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh is now much more straightforward, with minimal chances of rejection. This move is part of the Government of India's initiative to boost tourism in the North East.
Previously, these permits were a requisite for tourists visiting these border states due to their sensitive locations. But now, with this easing of restrictions, the dream of exploring the North East's lush landscapes, vibrant cultures, and unique traditions is more attainable for foreign travellers. Oraw mentioned that tourists should opt for tours organised by local operators in these states, as this would facilitate an easier permit process.
Additionally, there's a plan to make border areas up to 4 km near the China and Myanmar borders more accessible. This initiative, supported by the tourism, defence, and home ministries, is expected to not only enhance the tourist experience but also create employment opportunities for local communities.
North East India: A Rising Star in Domestic Tourism
The North East region has been steadily gaining popularity, especially among those who prefer sustainable and green tourism. Oraw pointed out that in 2021, the region set a new record in domestic tourism, welcoming over 1.3 crore visitors from different parts of India. The region's natural beauty, coupled with its warm hospitality and unique experiences, makes it a must-visit destination.
Furthermore, there's an ongoing effort to foster international tourism ties, especially with Southeast Asian countries. A collaboration between Vietnam and India is in the works, aiming to encourage more tourists from Southeast Asia, including countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Vietnam, to explore the diverse and rich experiences that India, particularly the North East, has to offer.
With the easing of permit regulations, the North East is more accessible than ever to foreign tourists. If you've been considering a trip to Nagaland, Mizoram, or Arunachal Pradesh, this is the perfect time to start planning. Remember to engage with local tour operators early on to ensure a smooth permit application process and get ready to immerse yourself in the wonders of India's North East!
