In a significant development that marks India's prominence on the global tourism map, Dhordo in Gujarat has been honoured with a spot in the distinguished UNWTO list of Best Tourism Villages. This scenic village, nestled in the culturally rich region of Kutch, is now internationally recognised, thanks to its unique banni hospitality, intricate mud craft, and the famed Mutwa embroidery.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) unveiled its list of 54 Best Tourism Villages for the year 2023, spotlighting Dhordo among the esteemed ranks. This recognition underscores the village's exemplary commitment to nurturing rural regions while safeguarding landscapes, cultural diversity, local values, and culinary traditions.

Dhordo's inclusion shines a light on its hosting of the renowned 100-day Rann Utsav, a festival that showcases the village's cultural opulence and offers a peek into the lives of the local artisans and craftspeople. Every corner of Dhordo tells a story of tradition, artistry, and an unwavering commitment to cultural preservation.

Adding to India's accolades, Madla in Madhya Pradesh is soon to join the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages Network as part of the Upgrade Programme. This expansion reflects the continuous efforts of Indian villages in upholding high standards of tourism and cultural preservation.

The UNWTO’s initiative is designed to promote rural development and inclusion, combating depopulation while encouraging innovation, value chain integration, and sustainable practices in tourism. Each selected village is a testament to the power of tourism as a catalyst for local development and well-being.

Every accolade and recognition, like that of Dhordo’s, is a step closer to making rural India a globally recognized hub for sustainable and culturally rich tourism. The future is bright, with ongoing efforts to uncover and uplift hidden gems of incredible India, bringing them to the world stage where they rightfully belong.

The 2023 UNWTO list of Best Tourism Villages also features remarkable villages from around the globe, including Al Sela in Jordan, Barrancas in Chile, and Biei in Japan. Each village exemplifies a harmonious blend of culture, nature, and innovation in tourism.

As we look ahead, the anticipation builds for the first months of 2024, where yet another call for submissions will unfold, ready to unveil the next set of rural wonders that continue to make our world a vibrant mosaic of cultural treasures. In the heart of every village lies a narrative waiting to be told, a culture waiting to be explored, and an experience waiting to be lived. In Dhordo, these tales of splendor await your discovery.
