The US spa industry has marked a significant achievement by recording an all-time high revenue of $21.3 billion in 2023, surpassing the previous record of $20.1 billion in 2022. This milestone highlights the industry's robust growth and resilience, as reported by the latest annual US Spa Industry Study conducted by the International Spa Association (ISPA) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
The study, which has been tracking the spa industry since 1999, evaluates the core metrics—total revenue, spa visits, spa locations, revenue per visit, and industry employment levels—dubbed the "Big Five". The findings of the 2024 edition reveal a 5.7 percent increase in revenue, a testament to the industry’s strength and consumer demand.
In detail, spa visits modestly grew from 181 million in 2022 to 182 million in 2023, a 0.6 percent increase, while the number of spa locations slightly rose from 21,790 to 21,840, reflecting a 0.2 percent growth. Notably, revenue per spa visit also saw a significant rise of 5.1 percent, moving from $111.50 to $117.20, indicating a higher spending per visit by consumers.
Furthermore, the spa industry's employment saw a notable uptick, with the workforce expanding by 2.6 percent from 360,700 to 370,100 by January 2024. This growth underscores the industry’s role as a significant employer and its contribution to the economy.
The findings were announced at the ISPA annual Conference & Expo in Scottsdale, Arizona, with the full study expected to be released later this year. It promises to provide deeper insights and comprehensive data that will further detail the dynamics and trends within the spa industry.
This record-setting performance marks a moment of celebration for the US spa industry, reflecting its ongoing innovation, adaptability, and the increasing value placed on wellness and relaxation by consumers across the country.
