As tourism continues to bring travellers closer to nature and wildlife destinations, the importance of responsible travel is becoming increasingly significant. On World Tourism Day, September 27, Anirudh Lakhotia, Director, Ivory Destinations, which includes The Golden Tusk and The Chamomile Estate, shares his perspective on the relationship between tourism and conservation in Corbett.
“This World Tourism Day, we're reminded that Corbett doesn't just draw travellers for a safari drive, it asks something more of us: to protect the wilderness we're inviting people into. At The Golden Tusk, every experience we design, from our villas to the conversations we have with guests, carries that responsibility.
We've seen firsthand how a well-informed traveller becomes a quiet advocate for the forest long after they've left, and that's the real dividend of tourism done right. Every destination needs more people who leave caring about what they saw. Tourism here isn't separate from conservation.” says Anirudh Lakhotia, Director, Ivory Destinations (The Golden Tusk and The Chamomile Estate)
His perspective highlights how tourism experiences can also create greater awareness about the destinations travellers visit. In wildlife and nature-led destinations such as Corbett, the experience extends beyond a safari or stay, with the relationship between visitors and the surrounding natural environment becoming an important part of the journey. By helping travellers understand the value of the wilderness around them, hospitality can contribute to a more responsible approach to tourism. For destinations built around nature, creating memorable experiences can go hand in hand with encouraging visitors to care about the landscapes and wildlife they encounter.
As World Tourism Day celebrates the many ways travel connects people with places and cultures, the message from Corbett also underlines the importance of ensuring that tourism and conservation grow together.
