Indian weddings are undergoing a remarkable transformation, blending tradition with modern elements. A recent study by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts sheds light on shifting preferences among couples, showcasing a move toward personalized, tech-savvy, and sustainable celebrations. The survey, which included 1,000 newly engaged or married individuals across India, revealed key trends shaping the wedding landscape.

While traditional hotspots like Goa, Udaipur, and Jaipur remain popular, unique destinations such as Darjeeling, Amritsar, Mussoorie, and Dehradun are gaining traction. These picturesque locations offer couples a mix of beauty and exclusivity, aligning with the desire for meaningful and memorable experiences. Wyndham’s extensive portfolio of 60 properties in India caters to this trend, providing venues in both iconic and offbeat destinations.

Indian weddings are scaling back up, with guest lists averaging 350-400 attendees. Approximately 52% of couples attribute their preference for grand, multi-day celebrations to the desire for unforgettable memories, while 34% cite social expectations. Despite the resurgence of grandeur, many couples remain budget-conscious, showcasing the diversity in wedding styles.

Modern couples, especially Gen Z, are redefining wedding planning by blending financial prudence with aspirational goals. The survey highlights:

  • 46% plan to spend up to ₹10 lakh.

  • 30% allocate ₹10-25 lakh for moderate yet elaborate celebrations.

  • 9% aim for premium weddings with budgets between ₹25-40 lakh.

  • Another 9% exceed ₹45 lakh, focusing on high-end experiences.

Social media plays a significant role, with 35% of couples inspired by platforms like Instagram, fueling a rise in visually stunning venues like beaches, rooftops, and mountains. Additionally, family involvement in planning themes, décor, and cuisine adds a personal touch while managing costs.

While destination weddings remain appealing, 40% of couples prefer local or nearby family-friendly venues to ensure accessibility and convenience for loved ones. Only 11% opt for far-off locations. Wyndham’s properties in both urban and scenic locales offer the perfect mix of convenience and luxury for these celebrations.

Technology is transforming wedding planning and execution. The survey reveals:

  • 36% of couples use LED screens for immersive displays.

  • 29% prefer digital invitations

  • 28% incorporate drone photography.

Other innovations like live streaming, AI-generated vows, and QR-coded check-ins cater to a digitally savvy audience, enhancing guest experiences with modern conveniences.

Eco-conscious weddings are on the rise, especially among millennial and Gen Z couples. Popular sustainable choices include:

  • Décor featuring dried flowers and solar lanterns.

  • Invitations made from recycled paper.

  • Eco-friendly wedding favors and reusable decorations.

  • Additionally, one in ten couples donates part of their wedding funds to charity, blending celebration with social responsibility.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts is uniquely positioned to cater to these evolving trends. With venues in iconic destinations like Udaipur and emerging locales like Darjeeling, the brand provides tailored options for every wedding style and budget.

Dimitris Manikis, President EMEA at Wyndham, remarked, “Whether it’s a grand celebration or an intimate gathering, Wyndham is committed to bringing couples’ visions to life. With our diverse portfolio across India, we help create weddings that are both meaningful and memorable.”
