In a historic transformation, the iconic Old War Office, once inhabited by UK's World War II era Prime Minister Winston Churchill, is set to open as a luxurious hotel on September 29. This incredible renovation is the result of the Hinduja Group's restoration efforts, marking a significant milestone for this historic building.
The Old War Office will be reborn as Raffles London at the Old War Office (OWO), offering 120 opulent rooms and suites, along with luxury residences, top-tier restaurants, and rejuvenating spas. The Hinduja Group embarked on this ambitious project after acquiring the building, situated opposite Downing Street, over eight years ago. Sanjay Hinduja, from the Hinduja Group, shared his thoughts on the project, stating, “When we came to Whitehall, the team were blown away by the size and beauty of this majestic building. No expense has been spared in bringing it back to its former glory and paying homage to its heritage, whilst breathing new life into it.”
The meticulous restoration involved hundreds of skilled artisans who painstakingly preserved historic interior elements. Delicate hand-laid mosaic floors, rich oak paneling, sparkling chandeliers, and a magnificent marble staircase now grace the Old War Office once more. One of the building's most historically significant areas is the Heritage Suites, which once served as offices for influential political and military leaders, including Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, and Sir Richard Haldane. These Heritage Suites, now available for exclusive reservations as 'The Whitehall Wing,' occupy the west wing of the building and can accommodate up to twelve guests. It's one of the largest luxury hotel wings in London.
Philippe Leboeuf, Managing Director of Raffles London at The OWO, expressed excitement about the project, saying, “At Raffles London, the history of the former Old War Office lives on, through its splendid architecture, carefully chosen interior design, and expansive Heritage Suites. Visitors will be spoiled for choice with the eclectic array of world-class restaurants and bars in an unrivaled location.”
Beyond the incredible Heritage Suites, guests can enjoy The Drawing Room, a relaxed all-day dining lounge with views overlooking Horse Guards. Additionally, Pillar Kitchen, a wellbeing-focused dining outlet, goes beyond just offering healthy food. It tailors meals to individual needs, akin to a personalized workout.
The Old War Office, designed by British architect William Young, has a rich history and has served as a backdrop in numerous films and series, including 'The Crown' on Netflix and James Bond films.
The Hinduja family's passion for heritage properties is evident in their earlier acquisition of 13-16 Carlton House Terrace, a heritage structure built in 1831. This property, located in the City of Westminster and neighboring Buckingham Palace, underwent extensive renovations and now stands as a testament to their commitment to preserving history.
As the Old War Office reopens its doors as a luxury hotel, it not only provides a glimpse into the past but also offers a grand experience for travelers seeking luxury and history in the heart of London.
