Thailand, in an exciting move for international travellers, has announced a visa-free entry policy for Indians starting from 10th November 2023. This initiative, stretching until 24th May 2024, is part of Thailand’s strategy to boost tourism and make travel more accessible.

Highlights of the Visa-Free Entry to Thailand for Indians:

Duration of the Policy: From 10th November 2023 to 24th May 2024, Indians can enjoy the ease of travelling to Thailand without the hassle of a visa.

Stay Period: Tourists from India can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days upon arrival.

Tourism Boost: This policy aims to revitalise Thailand's tourism industry, attracting more visitors from one of its largest source markets.

Tourist Influx: India ranks as the fourth largest source of tourists for Thailand, following Malaysia, China, and South Korea.

2023 Tourist Numbers: Thailand has already welcomed approximately 22 million tourists, nearing the government’s target of 28 million for the year.

Further Insights:

  • Thailand is the second country, after Sri Lanka, to offer such a convenience to Indian travellers.

  • In the period from January to October 2023, Thailand saw 22 million visitors, contributing significantly to its economy.

  • The visa-free entry is expected to attract an additional 1.4 million tourists, generating substantial revenue for Thailand.

  • The move aims to capitalise on the high travel interest from India and Taiwan.

  • Previously, Indian and Taiwanese tourists needed a 15-day visa-on-arrival, with additional requirements like bank statements and proof of accommodation.

Why This Matters for Indian Travellers:

The visa-free policy by Thailand marks a significant step in simplifying travel for Indian tourists. It not only acknowledges the importance of the Indian market for Thailand’s tourism but also opens up new opportunities for travellers seeking international experiences with less bureaucratic hassle.

This policy could lead to a surge in travel plans to Thailand, offering a seamless and more inviting travel experience. For Indian travellers, this presents a perfect opportunity to explore Thailand's rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant city life without the burden of complex visa procedures.

Looking Ahead:

As we await further official statements from the Thai Embassy, this development signals a positive trend in international travel post-pandemic, with countries easing entry requirements to revive tourism. For travel enthusiasts from India, the allure of Thailand's scenic beauty, cuisine, and hospitality is now just a flight away, with no visa worries to dampen the excitement.

Mechukha in Arunachal Pradesh's Shi Yomi district is gaining attention as an emerging destination for adventure tourism, with the second edition of the Mechukha Trout Quest bringing international anglers to the remote Himalayan valley.

Held along the Yargyap-chu River, close to the China border, the tournament concluded on July 26, 2026, with a valedictory ceremony that highlighted the region’s potential for responsible, community-led tourism. The event brought together 56 elite anglers, including participants from Bhutan, Thailand and different parts of India. The cold and clean waters of the Yargyap-chu River provided the setting for the competition, showcasing the valley’s potential for serious game fishing and adventure travel.

The tournament also featured Shri Bobby Satpal, regarded as India's foremost fly angler and guide, among the participating anglers. Organisers said the event has helped put Arunachal Pradesh on the international adventure-tourism map. A separate competition was also organised for residents of Shi Yomi district at the high-altitude Pasang Sonam Lake. The local competition offered a top prize of ₹1,00,000, while the runner-up received ₹50,000. The initiative was designed to ensure that local communities also benefit directly from the growing interest in the destination.

Derek Dsouza, Tournament Director, managed the technical and conservation aspects of the event. He is India's Representative for the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) and Vice President of Environment for the All India Game Fishing Association.

With the tournament following international conservation and sporting standards, the Trout Quest was positioned as a catch-and-release, low-impact game-fishing event, keeping the focus on responsible use of the region's natural resources.

The event was organised in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, as part of efforts to strengthen adventure tourism infrastructure and improve the visitor experience across the state. The initiative also reflects a wider focus on developing responsible and community-led tourism in remote border areas such as Shi Yomi. The region has the potential to benefit from a high-value, low-volume tourism model that can support local communities while respecting the sensitive Himalayan environment.

The closing ceremony was attended by Chief Guest Shri Gabriel D. Wangsu, Hon'ble Minister for Agriculture and Allied Sectors, Government of Arunachal Pradesh; Guest of Honour Shri Pasang Dorjee Sona, Hon'ble Minister for Tourism, Education and RWD, Government of Arunachal Pradesh; Shri Rujjum Rakshap, Director of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh; Shri Manjunath R., IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Shi-Yomi District; along with Army officers from the region.

Chief Guest Shri Gabriel Wangsu presented cash prizes across the professional fly-fishing, lure-fishing and local community categories.

In his valedictory address, Minister Wangsu highlighted the need for tourism models that protect Mechukha’s natural environment while creating long-term opportunities for local communities. He also pointed to regulated and eco-friendly adventure sports as an important part of the region’s future tourism growth. The tournament also appears to have created interest for future editions. Several international anglers reportedly expressed their intention to return, citing the professional organisation of the event and the untouched high-altitude landscape.

For Mechukha, the response from international participants offers an early indication of the destination’s potential to develop into a distinctive adventure-tourism hub while keeping sustainability and local communities at the centre of its growth.
