Indira Point, the southernmost tip of India's territory, is gearing up for a major makeover. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, during his recent visit, has set the wheels in motion to transform this serene point on Great Nicobar Island into a significant tourist destination.

This move is part of the Maritime India Vision 2030, focusing on boosting marine infrastructure in Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. The initial phase targets job creation through tourism promotion and local product exports, with four islands in Andaman & Nicobar and five in Lakshadweep earmarked for development. The plan will eventually expand to include more islands in these regions.

Sonowal's two-day tour of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands included a strategic visit to Atlanta Bay near Diglipur and an aerial inspection of the International Container Transshipment Port (ICTP) project at Galathea Bay. This project is a key component of the Sagarmala Project, aiming to catalyze regional development and streamline transportation networks.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of a proposed 10-meter draft harbor in northern Andaman & Nicobar, envisioning its role in enhancing high-end tourism and reducing travel time between major ports. With a vision of inclusive growth under PM Modi's leadership, the focus is on regional development through improved connectivity.

The broader initiative includes substantial funding for projects in inland waterways, with a focus on Assam. The Sagarmala program is overseeing numerous projects, including jetties along the Brahmaputra and Barak Rivers, to boost cargo and tourist transport.

Looking ahead to the Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, 26 islands across Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Gujarat are earmarked for comprehensive development. The blueprint includes diverse initiatives like eco-tourism, ship repair, maritime training institutes, and Free Trade Zones, aiming to unlock the full potential of these islands.

Indira Point's development as a major tourist destination is a significant step in this ambitious project, signaling a new era of growth and opportunity for the region.
