Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has introduced direct flights connecting Bandar Seri Begawan and Chennai, marking a key expansion in its network and reinforcing ties between Brunei and India. The inaugural flight, landing in Chennai on November 5, 2024, was welcomed with a water cannon salute, symbolizing a promising beginning for this new route. This direct connection aligns with the two countries' shared ambitions for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

The airline hosted a series of launch events at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai, collaborating with the Brunei High Commission, Brunei Economic and Development Board (BEDB), and Brunei Tourism. The celebrations highlighted Brunei’s unique cultural appeal and investment potential, inviting Indian businesses to explore growth opportunities. A key event, “Brunei Night,” featured traditional Bruneian performances and remarks from dignitaries, including Brunei's High Commissioner to India, Dato Paduka Hj Alaihuddin Mohd Taha, and Tamil Nadu's Minister of Industries, Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa. The event also celebrated the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei, underscoring mutual goals for growth and partnership.

RB’s CEO, Captain Sabirin Hj Abdul Hamid, expressed optimism for the new route, describing it as a "bridge for tourism, trade, and cultural connection." The flights, operating three times weekly on the fuel-efficient Airbus A320neo, will connect Chennai travelers to various RB destinations, including Melbourne, Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Singapore, via a codeshare with Air India. This enhanced connectivity aims to ease business and leisure travel, promoting Brunei as an offbeat destination for Indian tourists.

The launch reflects broader national goals, including India’s ASEAN-India Tourism Year 2025 and Brunei’s Wawasan 2035 vision, each aimed at fostering regional economic ties and increasing international tourism. By bridging new markets and providing direct access between these countries, RB is also supporting Brunei’s initiative to build a globally connected economy while preserving its distinct cultural heritage.
