Victoria set remarkable tourism records in 2024, establishing itself as a top global destination for international visitors and world-class events. Nearly 250,000 arrivals were recorded at Melbourne Airport during the holiday season, with India emerging as the second-largest source market for international arrivals. Over 200,000 Indian tourists visited Victoria, showcasing a growing connection between the state and Indian travelers. Indian visitor spending experienced a 31% year-on-year increase, contributing significantly to Victoria’s thriving visitor economy. One of the year’s most notable moments was the historic Melbourne debut of the Pro Kabaddi League at John Cain Arena. The event captivated global audiences, reaching 14.2 million viewers across India, and underscored Victoria’s growing prominence in hosting international sporting spectacles. Another highlight was the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which shattered records with a crowd of 373,691 spectators. This milestone marked the largest Test cricket attendance in Australian history and the second-largest globally, reinforcing Melbourne’s reputation as a premier venue for global sporting events. Brendan McClements, CEO of Visit Victoria, highlighted the significance of these events, saying: “Broadcasting to such a large audience for both the Boxing Day Test and the Pro Kabaddi League Melbourne Raid has delivered huge promotional value for Victoria. These events are part of a vibrant summer calendar, including the Australian Open, the Women’s Ashes, and the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the NGV, all contributing to a thriving visitor economy.” Victoria’s international tourism expenditure reached a staggering USD 8.8 billion, reflecting a 57% increase from the previous year. This growth further cements Victoria's standing as a global tourism hub. With its rich cultural attractions, sporting events, and a strong connection with India, Victoria continues to draw global travelers, ensuring its place as a must-visit destination.
